Don't think you should be too worried. Irish banks are better capitalised than many of their UK and European counterparts. Bank of Ireland are probably in the best shape of all the Irish banks and will be offering banking facilities at all UK Post Offices over the next year. But if you want a foreign bank, perhaps KBC or Danske Bank are worth looking at. Irish State Savings wouldn't be too risky either. AIB looks like a dead man walking though.

Thanks guys, but rumours abound that we could end up in a Cyprus suituation. Where deposits are up for grabs by the government.

Probably worth spreading your risk between several institutions rather than having deposits over €100k

Will the Government grab some of the state savings:mad:

The EU have admitted it was a major error to even contemplate touching savers with less than 100k. It hasn't happened (even in Cyprus). And I doubt it will happen, otherwise there will be zero confidence in any bank.

An easy Target nr # 1 on the basis of deposits > € 100k and businesses are not voters:(

Well since there now appears to be a further €16bn hole in the banks balance sheets due to forthcoming distressed mortgages having their losses crystallised the OP is right to be worried.

I would doubt the Irish government would go take a dip from deposits, I think they know the roasting they'd get for it. Still though at a minimum I reckon you should split the money between more than one account.
