Noticed this on one of my cows today, its not painful to her and isnt stopping her grazing in any way but kind of worrying all the same, its hard but i can move it about under the skin, dont mind the dribble/saliva i was after dosing her with minerals

Any ideas, similar cases.. it popped up in last 24 hours so see how she is and will get vet out if gets any worse or if she becomes ill with it

Did you look in the mouth? Cud it be grass trapped in between the teeth and cheek?

    hi greysides,

i was on my own and she is a handful at the best of times so i couldnt see that far in and i was stupid enough to put my hand into a cows mouth before that had eaten plastic and she mangled 2 fingers!

ill try and get someone else to hold her and look back with torch/piece of clean wavin pipe

    is that common?

Bodacious, no it's not common on it's own but it could happen if the back teeth are missing.

(I'm going by your remark that it's movable.)

More commonly a lump on the jaw is hard and due to an infection of the jaw bone.
An infection of the tongue is usually underneath but could be to one side and is soft.

    An abscess could occur anywhere.

You're dead right to be careful of your fingers. They are in limited supply.

Had the exact same problem with a bulling heifer during the week and like your cow it came up in the space of 24 hours but I gave her 2 shots of Bimoxyl LA and 2 shots of Corynixin and it seems to be going down...I have no idea what the cause of it was.

Have one or 2 every year that happens to. I used to put it down to them getting a prod of a blackthorn but maybe there is a different cause. Never treated any of them and the lump usually goes down over time.

Shes out grazing?....would think she got a prod of something and has slight infection....these normally clear up themselves with no ill effects.

    Hi lads/ladies

She out grazing well was ! Pulled them back into winterage on silage once rain hit as to avoid damaging paddocks ... But great reduction in lump this morning ... Half the size .. I reckon a prod or tooth infection but it has not affected her
