The W203 C180 - Any good?

Hey guys, so summer is coming soon, and I might be getting a job for the period, so I might be buying a car in September (at last, tired of borrowing my mammy's car).

I looked into insurance prices and looks like I'll be able to insure the Merc W203 C180 - these have the 2.0 129hp petrol engine.

I never even thought about buying a Merc, so I was just wondering what are they like to drive and live with everyday? Are they comfortable? I'm not expecting huge economy, but with my low mileage a diesel is not justifiable. And I like to have some gadgets, so definitely don't want anything smaller. (I'm looking into the Audi A4, BMW 3 Series, Volvo S40 segment).

    For the record, I'm 19.

(Now, sit back and wait for the 1.25 fiesta suggestions)

A poor car from Mercedes when they were new. Not very well built, electrics were troublesome and the petrol kompressor engines had timing chain problems. Buy something else would be my advice.

    It's not the Kompressor though.

    Is the 2002 1.6 A4 any good?

It wouldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding. Don't expect to be going anywhere in a hurry.

Good machines, dont let anyone else tell you otherwise. I remember when these were 40k new and was looking at them.

Have one at the moment. That engine is from a w124, so pretty solid. Economy working out at about 32mpg for me over 700kms.

You would want to be comfortable with working on a car though if you are getting an older european compact executive car, and the odd malfunction and Check Engine light wouldn't want to scare either you or your pocket.

A nicely specced Mondeo is likely to cost less.

Hmmm... Thought it's going to be worse on insurance, but actually the 2.0 Ghia Mondeo is only 100 quid more to insure. I could live with that I guess.

PS. And the V6 is only 200 more than the C-Class! The V6 is tempting, but then the tax... :(

(On the other hand LPG conversion, and the tax is justified :P )

    For anyone interested, 19, full licence, 2 years named driver experience - €2331.92 for a 2004 Mondeo 2.5 V6.
