Annual bonus last week of probation period?

    Hey there,

I have a query and would love any opinions or advice which people may have on this.

Basically, annual bonus are due to be paid on 25th April to all in the company (not sure of the amount as it differs for everyone).

Here's the thing, I began work last June in the company and my 10 month probationary period isn't due to expire until 26th April (day after bonus is paid.)

Anyway, I'm sure ye get where this is going...I'm wondering whether I'm going to get it or get nada!

I've had all my reviews with my manager who is v pleased with my work and progress in the company and I've been getting great feedback from any managers I've been dealing with. During my latest review which was 26th march my manager said that we'd be having a final one this day next month (ie around 26th april) but that it was merely a formality etc as all was well. She made no mention of a bonus to me during the review.

Ok so what does everyone think......? Am I going to get the bonus? I've a bad feeling I'm not which is killing me as I know that a colleague who started on another team a week before me is getting theirs. I'm going to feel pretty hard done by if I miss out on this because I had one more day to go on my probation but I've a terrible feeling that I will. :(

Would be great if anyone could shed some light or any similar experiences which they may have had. :-)

If I don't get it and my probation is signed off on the next day I'm considering voice my disappointment at this to my manager. Would this be inappropriate? My role is basically a grad role and is pretty poorly paid anyway (mid20k) and a large chunk goes on rent so this is why a few extra quid would be a big help!

From reading your post, it seems you didn't mention it either.
Best person to ask is your manager.

Correct, I didn't mention it during my review as at this stage I wasn't even aware that there was a an annual process. I am intending to ask my manager if it does transpire that I'm not eligible and so would appreciate any opinions on whether this would be inappropriate or indeed any other advice at all as to how I should broach the subject.

It's not unusual for people who have been with the company less than 12 months to be excluded from the bonus altogether. However as you say someone else who has been there less than 12 months is getting it then it's reasonable to expect you would also get it. However you bring it up be prepared for the possibility that you may be told no - and be tactful about how you deal with it from there. Do you know for certain the other new recruit is getting it, and if so how do you know?

We have no way of knowing whether or not you will be receiving your bonus based on the information you have provided.

You need to ask your employer.

Companies can make their own rules up about bonuses.

They are discretionary, and we could never know if you are entitled to one this or any other year.

If your on probation then more than likely you will not get any bonus at all.

If your probation had finished say 6 months through the year and your made permanent then you'd get a bonus for the remaining 6 months. Or on a three month probation and made permanent you'd get a bonus for the remaining 9 months etc etc...

That's the way its worked for anywhere I've been so i wouldn't be hoping for anything.

    Thanks for the feedback.

Do you think it's ok for me to bring this up in my mid year review that I am a little disappointed with this or would I just be souring things?

I Wouldn't bring it up TBH, Its pretty well known that you get sweet FA when your on probation periods all across the land. From next week you will be entitled to a full bonus next year, and i'm sure you'll be told and won't need to bring it up. Depending on performance that is :)

Just bringing attention on yourself you don't need, If the company is in anyway decent they will throw you something this year. If not then your just like the rest of us who got nothing while on probation :)

10 month probation seems excessive by the way. Was it extended?

I would be more worried that you actually have a permanent job at the end of the probation period. You are barely in the door. If you are due a payment you will receive it.

Don't bring it up. Can you not ask HR about it. It's common enough for companies to make bonuses only take effect after probation because it is considered that probation is a learning period.

No probation period wasn't extended, it's 10 months for everyone (does seem a bit much though).

I had excellent reviews and feedback to date and have already been told that my job is permanent, just a little disappointing to miss out by a day or two!
