What would the main difference between the two.

Most people say go deisel but is that the only difference between the two.
    Its a 2008 A4 1.8 Petrol asking price €14,495

Wondering if it would be better paying the extra few quid for the TDI model?

    Depends on your mileage

First question would be how many miles you'll be doing?

A modern diesel is meant to be driven and is not suited to short mainly urban runs. That will lead to expensive problems over time - something we all need to be aware of now buying post 08 diesels. A higher mileage fully serviced model may be actually a better bet as at least it's been used properly.

Milage will be around 10-12 a year at a good guess, little around town driving, mostly up and down the country.
Have found a 2.0TDI version for the same price as a 1.8 petrol.

    Deisel has 140k
    Petrol have 110k (I think)

So it doesn't even come down to a cost thing anymore - just which is the better version for a car that wont be used extensivly and when it will be burning up motor way miles. Plus I don't intend holding ontop this car for more than 2- years max

If it were to boil down to resale value then the diesel would hold it's value a lot better than the petrol when you go to sell it on. The fact that the petrol model is so close to the cost of the diesel model would suggest to me that the petrol model is overpriced.

From a cost of ownership perspective, the diesel may cost more to service/maintain in the long run with things like expensive things such as a DMF and DPF having the potential to need replacing down the road especially if you do a lot of short runs.

The DMV is so common to fail now on the Audi's that I even see "flywheel replaced" on car ads.
