Nintendo will discontinue a bunch of online Wii services in June, the company has announced.

You'll no longer be able to send and receive messages with other users via the Wii Message Board or access a number of Channel apps.

The big switch-off will happen in the UK on 28th June, Nintendo confirmed to Eurogamer.

For the chop are the Nintendo Channel, News Channel, Forecast Channel, Everybody Votes Channel and Mii Contest Channel. The News and Weather channels were kept updated for more than seven years, sniff.

Notably, however, the Wii Shop Channel will remain open - for now.

Realistically most were useless and a mere novelty factor - I didn't load any of them more than 3 or 4 times.

Still, a sign that the end is nigh...

I hardly used them either, but I think the disappointing thing is that they have done this while they still continue to sell the wii. Don't think it would have killed them to stop the service when they stop production, or when they have shifted production wholly to the unconnected red wii.

Are they still producing normal Wiis? The prices make it look more like a stock liquidation

Presume the shop will stay up for a while since you can't download the WiiU transfer tool without it, or download Wii titles to the vWii. Must get around to that soon :)
