Okay I am a sprinter and I've been hearing conflicting views on how I should tackle weights. Basically should I be lifting heavy with low reps or lifting light with high reps. I am very confused!

It's all depends what you look for!
Is you want to gain muscle then heavy weights with low reps will be the way to go to increase the volume or your muscles to increase your power in sprints.
and if you only want to maintain size put increase the flexibility, technique & fibre the muscles that you already have then high reps are good.

Sprinters lift heavy with low weights to build muscle and strength.

But if you are new to sprinting or still developing, approach with caution to avoid injury.
Look for a coach/trainer who can help put together a program that meets your needs.

Would lifting heavy weights slow you down though?

It's all about high intensity with long recoveries. You want to build power. Maybe for 800m runners the volume would be higher, intensity lower and less recoveries. Whatever you do ease into it and get proper advice.
