Interesting, If you own all that gas i suppose........

    Ode To The Motorist

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

For all of 120 rubles - about $3.80, or a little more than a gallon of regular unleaded fuel in the United States - he can drive 140 miles. The Toyota hybrid would need three gallons of gas to drive that distance according to a report in the New York Times.

    Quality reporting there.

So A Lada needs less gas than a Prius does petrol ? lol seriously doubt that !

But LPG is the way to go for now for HGV use, and for most petrol cars, we should have done it years ag, we don't need diesels and their toxic emissions and unreliability.

The ESB are investing heavily in electric charge points and I think using part of our wind or as much as possible is a great way to go for cars, not to mention the ultra cheap costs to drive and the job creation involved. It would help greatly to keep money in Ireland and not give it to foreign energy companies.

Russia has lots of gas and much less oil. It makes sense for Russia, it makes no sense for other countries that don't have access to abundant natural gas.

Is this a press release from Gazprom ?

Ireland has gas and they are finding lots more, but what we need is our own exploration crews.

    That isnt quite correct.
LPG can be refined from natural gas. They are both "natural mineral" based fuels (direct and via refining), there is no practical distinction there when contrasted against synthetic fuels.

LPG is IMO, far superior for vehicle applications, NG is superior for home heating.
LPG is composed primarily of propane and butane, while natural gas is composed of the lighter methane and ethane. LPG, vaporised and at atmospheric pressure, has a higher calorific value (94 MJ/m3 equivalent to 26.1kWh/m3) than natural gas (methane) (38 MJ/m3 equivalent to 10.6 kWh/m3),

Much more energy dense leading to higher performance/economy and also has lower storage pressure resulting in vastly lighter tanks with greater capacity and therefore again, performance. CNG is a fairly crap automotive fuel but might be plausible in massive machines with regular refueling.

Hardly news at all. Most of the Marshrutka's (Mini Buses taxi http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marshrutka) run on gas there for the last 5 years at the very least. It certainly is a lot cheaper, but the lifetime of the engine decreases dramatically.

CNG is a non runner in Ireland as there is I think one refueling point (somewhere in Dublin) in the entire country. LPG is just starting a small revival and even then there is only around 70-80 outlets selling LPG in the whole country. LPG is a much more viable alternative as there is almost enough places selling LPG to make it worthwhile and if you live near an LPG outlet then you are sorted.

I've been driving on LPG with over 6 months now.

You're right about the fueling infrastructure, there's only two places in the south. It's not financially viable for private vehicles but for commercial vehicles it makes sense depending on km's per day it travels.

It takes 8 hours to fill the tanks but a fast fill fuel station can be installed for €100k which fills it in 6 mins. Don't get me wrong that's a huge investment.

If a company had 10 vans that travel 25k per year, over 6 years the net saving on fuel and including purchasing a fast fill station would be €107,000 & a CO2 reduction of 106.8 tonnes across the fleet.

Oh yeah, it would be more something of use to fleets as you say. Of course a depot would also need to be located on a gas-pipeline and not even every county in Ireland is served by Bord Gais. It dosen't seem like a viable alternative for the private motorist though.

I've seen it in Thailand and loads of trucks and lorrys run off CNG as does nearly every Taxi and loads of private cars also. It has been Government policy there for years to use their own off-shore Gas as an alternative to Oil which they lack. Despite the popularity of CNG in Thailand, LPG is also widely available there too but CNG is the most popular alternative fuel.

I'm surprised big lorry operators here have not began converting their fleets as with current Diesel prices it would make more sense for the Government to provide tax breaks and incentives for LPG and CNG rather than fuel duty rebates which was talked about in the last budget. Ireland has loads of offshore Gas from the Corrib field in Mayo and also from the old head of Kinsale both of which could easily be used to reduce our dependence on expensive imported Oil.

I am going to Ukraine this summer, I've been always wondering would it be possible to import Lada to Ireland. havent' seen any of them here, knowing their "great" quality - makes me think it's not even gonna pass NCT.

In Ukraine in my City which is very near Russia Boarder, all petrol stations have gas available for cars. When I came to Ireland I thought it's weird that not all of petrol stations have gas here.
