Just drove from terenure to skerries (through Dublin city). Temperature gauge stayed between bottom and half (normally stays at half). Opened bonnet and opened expansion tank. Slight hiss opening and water in it is cold. Also heat from vents is poor. Any ideas....van is 2004 Nissan Kubistar 1.5 dci.

    Thanks in advance.

I would guess that the termostat is stuck open. Temperature reaches half when the van is stationery but would drop as soon as you start moving and there is an air flow trough the radiator, therefore cooling your engine down.

    Cheers^^…

Is it a big job to fix? Or can it be fixed...or buy a new one and fit it?

Buy a new one and fit it.

As they say in retail. 'Once they're gone they're gone'

Not usually,as the housing cover is usually only held on with two or three nuts. You may need a replacement gasket, which you should get with the new thermostat, so check the box before going home! Also, be cautious of over tightening as the alloy housing can sometimes crack. Check for leaks after it has wamed up, as everything expands under heat, and tighten a tad more if needed.
