Is there some sort of cyclist secret wave?

I've just started cycling to work and have noticed other cyclists nodding or smiling at me. One of them shouted HELLO at me from across the road.

Should I nod/greet the cyclists I meet? Is there some sort of etiquette I don't know about?

    /noob

tbh I'm not sure where it all started off. But just give them a nod/wave back. I find it is the same with motorbike riders on quieter roads as well if they pass each other. Maybe it's a two wheeled thing :)

Yes, but we can't tell you about it, 'cos it's a secret. And when you give the wrong wave in return, everyone will know you're a Fred.

    :pac:

I am appauled at your behaviour. Angry and indignant does not describe my feelings for your vile act. I have immense empathy for those complete strangers the world over whose bums you have groped.
You are beneath my contempt, but I will hold you in contempt anyway.

The secret wave's roughly a Nazi salute, and you'd usually throw in a "HEIL!" along with it. We've been trying to downplay it for the last few years, I mean it has nothing to do with Hitler or anything, the similarity's just a big coincidence, but it's still pretty offensive when you think about it. Sometimes you'll get traditionalists, on their steel frames with their BioPace chainrings or whatever, and they'll throw up the long arm for you - it's meant as a mark of respect, but the whole Third Reich thing really harshed our collective secret-wave buzz. Sad times, friend.

Whatever you do, don't wave at anyone wearing triathlon club gear. They have an inability to see you... its almost like they pretend they don't see you!

everyone gets a wave but a fred, if you dont know what a fred is you are a fred and so should let other cyclists know not to acknowledge you, a look of pure disdain is all that awaits a fred

'The Wave' is like helmets, hi viz, 'road' tax, insurance, license, single file, 'spandex', cycle lanes, leg shaving and drug testing; all should be compulsory for all cyclists but aren't and its a bloody disgrace Joe

    Is it Friday yet?
