Broke SATA connector off 3 Terabyte Drive

    Hi yall

I've a 3TB drive I accidently broke the SATA connector off. I kinda died because obviously a lot of info on it.

The little metal ribbons are jutting out and I was able to sit them inside a SATA cable carefully propped up and kept in position with a sponge. I'm able to access the drive.

However I want to get this fixed / sorted.

Any suggestions? I can buy another 3TB drive and copy all info over and recycle this drive. But is there a maybe some place that would fix it for me? Could be cheaper than buying a new drive maybe...

When did you buy the drive? A lot of manufacturers will cover this under warranty.

You could probably get someone to solder a sata cable directly to the pins, A decent solderer should be able to do that no bother.

Someone on the Modding service thread on the Console modding forum would be able to do this handy enough, pm guys in your area to ask them.

I figured since it's not a manufacturer fault that route would be pointly but if you think it's worth a try I'll give it a go.

    Thanks

Thanks Witness I do know about this forum but never thought of that option as a possibility. Will try this after contacting manufacturer.

    Cheers fellas

DO NOT SEND IT TO THE MANUFACTURE. Well, not until you get the info off it, as they'll probably just give you a brand new fresh drive.

Throw up a picture of the damage, in case someone knows how to fix it, or at least allow you to get the data off it...

No no syco I have the drive connected right now. After a lot of fiddling I managed to connect a sata cable to it but I had to carefully place a sponge in there to hold the cable in place, since the plastic part it usually connects to is broken off.

So in short I'm able to use the drive right now, however it's extremely precarious :)

I'll defo copy the data off it before I sent it away and I'll probably format it too. I used to work in a computer tech center, I wouldn't trust anyone with a hard drive full of my data on it, no one. I'd take a large magnet to it at the very least :)

Once I get the drive backed up I'll post pics. Was just wondering if there was a cheap way to repair it so it's not total rubbish. Witness and Blood came up with a couple of cracker ideas.

Anyways enough advice for now I believe. I'll post pics up once I have it backed up and unplugged. Until then talk to you later fellas. Thanks.

    Use supercopier; http://ultracopier.first-world.info/supercopier.html

If the connection is lost, it stops, and can resume when the connection comes back. Handy for dodgy networks, and your situation...

In 2011, I sent back a 4yr old 500gb SATA2 7200RPM Barracuda (5yr warranty) to Seagate in Holland. The sata connector had broken off. I wrapped it in antistatic, some foam from a new motherboard package and put it in a smallish cardboard box. i.e. not original packaging.

They sent me back a brand new replacement about 3 weeks later. Happy days!
