Anyone know how long it will take toyota to do the work on the airbag recall. How long does it take to change an inflator?

Make that 38000 affected in Ireland

Affects Honda, Nissan and Mazda too, but it's cool for the media to just bash Toyota for it!!

    Irish Times
In Ireland it represents nearly two per cent of the entire car fleet on the road and involves vehicles built between November 2000 and March 2004.

Toyota Ireland is recalling 23,290 vehicles. The models involved are Yaris (10,380), Corolla (11,149) and Avensis (1,761).

Nissan is to recall just over 13,500 cars. The models affected are the Almera, Navara, Pathfinder, Patrol, Tarrano, Tino and the X Trail.

Honda Ireland is to recall around 1,500 cars. The Honda cars in question mainly date back to 2001/2002 and include some Civic, Jazz, and CRV models.

Mazda is recalling 390 cars in Ireland, mainly expected to be Mazda6 models built between 2002 and 2003.

have an '05 Avensis going to local dealer tomorrow recalled for a potential steering problem - while I'm there i will ask is it affected by this airbag recall - two birds, one stone and all that...

The dealer probably won't be able to tell you - yet. I doubt the dealer has received (or has access to) a list of chassis numbers yet.

At the moment, I'd say the manufacturers have a list of chassis numbers that are subject to the recall. Next step is to ensure that there is adequate supply of spare parts. Dealers will also be issued with the repair procedure - this may already be in progress.

Once everything is in place at dealer level then the Irish distributor/manufacturer will make contact with affected customers.

Given the age of some of these vehicles, I doubt very much that all affected vehicles will have the recall carried out.

Possibly because it's not really a problem, only a potential problem. It's to do with one part used in the airbag assembly that was manufactured by a company who supplied those car makers.
I don't know what circumstances cause them to find out these things, but to be fair, seeing as there are no reported cases in Europe I'd say if you were to never get the recall done you'll be grand!

If I am a second hand owner of an affected car, can I just call into a Toyota garage to replace it?

Given that these are cars built between 00-04 i am sure you will get sorted. Give them a call anyway.
They do get some bad publicity because of these recalls, but when you take age of the cars into account, they should be rewarded, and rightly so.
You will never see other manufacturers to go back to customers after 10 years, and admit they did something wrong. Airbag lifetime is 10 years anyway, isn't it?

Ah horse****. There's 1 reason they're doing it. The US. Toyota got such an incredibly bad name from the hole sticky throttle debacle that the Japanese makes are all desperate to save face and rebuild their reputation in the states that they'll jump on to anything they can to prevent a similar thing breaking out and killing their sales again. It continues to amaze me that anyone thinks the motor industry is anything but a numbers game.

Very true audi got crucified in the states years ago because some of their cars would start in gear, it took them a long time to recover. but do you think other manufacturers would do this? Bmw in particular, nikisil problems, blown turbos, engines eating swirl flaps, rattley timing chains etc
The other thing is recalls arent that uncommon, peugeot recalled all the 407s at one stage because one part failed at extremely cold temps, we never see those temps in Ireland but they all were changed.
The peugeot garage I was dealing with at the time werent that happy doing it either, the time peugeot had allowed was about half the time it actually took. So I dont know if you will be welcomed back to the dealer with open arms;)

If you are the registered owner you will most likely get a letter from Toyota. Toyota will request a list of registered owners from the Department of Transport for the sole purpose of conducting the recall.

You can also call your local dealer who will be able to tell you if your chassis number is in the affected range although they may not have that information just yet.

You would never see German manufacturers doing a recall of this sort of issue or with cars of this age. Fair play to them for doing the recall, shows the Japanese' honesty.

VW did a massive recall in the late 90s that involved either fitting a bypass valve and/or replacing the heater matrix to avoid a slight risk of legs getting scalded. It involved Golfs, Jettas & Passats dating back to the early 80s.

    Late 90's..... Exactly.

Japanese are coming out with recalls every few months with small issues (Honda with a window switch that never caught fire, but might have caught fire if you got loads of water into it).

The amount of issues you hear about that are well known faults, but that they try to sweep under the carpet and claim they've never had an issue and dont issue a recall about it.

Ah sure if any of us get a recall I guess we'll just get it fixed :P

We have 2006, 2008 and 2010. Hopefully it won't be a problem with ours though :D

@dh0011 - If you're still there, i'd say you'll be leaving the car with them for the day.
