An inconsistent swing.

Does anyone else feel like they swing the club differently on every swing?

Be it off the tee, on the fairway or on the green.

I have no pre-shot routine to speak of and I think this is a big part of the problem. I'm playing off 16 and feel I can go much lower if I can only become a much more consistent ball striker.

Any advice on pre-shot routines that you find help you with a consistent swing?

Do you practice much or have you had any lessons?

Would be difficult to build up any sort of consistency without putting the work in at the range.

Everyone will have their own pre-shot routine. One thing I like to do is take practice swings until its a swing I feel I want to repeat, whether that takes 1 practice swing or 5 (this ould get quite tiresome though if you go overboard with it!!!)

One thing I'm working with at the moment is to try to have less of a minute feel of control over my swing.
I think its impossible to have the same swing (at my level anyway) each time, but I also dont think that you need to.
If your swing is pretty much the same each time and your impact position is ok then you wont have too much of problem imo.

I also think thats why its much more beneficial to not have technical thoughts in your head when you play, otherwise you get caught up on whats right and whats wrong, even if it doesnt really matter to the result.

Sounds easy, but I guess thats the secret to the game.

I'd have a similar problem. Currently getting lessons so I'm hoping that a few educated pointers to how I should be swinging it will help me groove a more regular swing. One thing the pro did say was that the swing should be the same for all clubs, just the ball positions changes.

Also, this hasn't come up in the lessons so far but I think some of it often down to inconsistent address position. Pros are generally completely consistent in their address position (allowing for lie, club etc.) so they're giving themselves the best chance of making their 'normal' swing. Amateurs, particularly higher handicappers will generally have much larger variances between how they would address the ball each time for the same club/lie.

I havent had a lesson in my life but I'm seriously considering getting a few soon. I can't handle the heartache.

I put in a good amount of time on the range only to play on Sunday to find I can't find my rhythm.

Get the lessons. You'll probably still struggle but ultimately you should improve if you put the effort in.

I started using a quick pre-shot routine last year and i "think" it has helped with my game. I just practice a swing but stop at the top of my backswing for a split second and make sure I get my hips moving before my downswing starts. I used to suffer an awful slice and this has almost eliminated it.

Went down to the range last night and hit 80 balls - first time to hit a ball since the esker outing and was suprised at the consistency of my swing now. Will see how it is after a round tomorrow though!
