I lived in Dublin for many years and have a doctor that I really like I do not have a medical card I pay every time I go I have recently moved to Meath and my GP's secretary is pushing for me to move to a doctor that is nearer to me ! I have no intention of using the doc on call service or anything else in my local area. Seemingly there are new rules coming in etc etc. My friends have doctors in the area and I don't like the sound of any of them and my question is simple do I have (legally) have to move to a doctor nearer to my home address or can I stay with my Dublin doctor who I am very happy with for the last 20 years ?

As a private patient you are free to use whatever GP service you choose if they are happy to accept your custom.

Of course you can stay with the Doctor you have been happy with for the past 20 years. You are the customer as you are paying for the service that Doctor provides. You should really have a good chat with the secretary to find out why she is trying to push your business away. It could be that she thinks she is being helpful by telling you to go to a Doctor nearer to your new address. If she is going on about new rules (?) ask her to explain these new rules to you fully pointing out that you are a PRIVATE patient and have been 'on the books' for 20 years.
