So it seems that Spike's fight has once again fallen through with Selkirk pulling out due to reasons unknown. He has been on Facebook recently stating that he has accepted a match with a prominent British middleweight who is unnamed at yet but there is speculation that it could be Billy Joe Saunders. It's believed that if he gets through this fight and another after that he could be looking at a title shot against Peter Quillin.

Has anybody been following this and if so what do they make of his prospects?

Was that Liverpool Olympia card not cancelled due to poor ticket sales?

Boxrec says he is pencilled-in to fight next month in Dublin.

spikes 16-0 now won his fight tonight in dublin

Dear Lord I'm all for supporting irish fighters but seriously, putting him in against Quillin would just be pointless. Haven't seen anything from him yet to suggest he belongs anywhere near that level.

Spike v Saunders is definitely on. Am I the only one who thinks Saunders is going to win a comfortable decision?

Spike is 14/1 to win by KO with Stan James, I'd nearly throw a fiver on him out of solidarity! I really do hope he puts up a good show.

Saunders will have far too much class for Spike unfortunately.

    Spike up next.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,226 ✭✭✭qwabercd

Stupid (risky at the least) by Malik Scott but surely he was up in time?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,625 ✭✭✭✭Johner

Billy Joe looks a bit too quick and classy for Spike so far.

Agreed, only hope is if he tires. Looks a class above.

Good round that, great body work by spike. Big volume of punches thrown by Saunders, hopefully it becomes a slug fest.

I think thats the only chance Spike has! Try to drag him into a war.

Tbh, I don't think he can win any way in this fight, Saunders is far too good.

Saunders looks to be tiring hoefully O Sullivan has the strength down the stretch

    Thanks lads.

Just got a remote message that our server is shutting down in 4 mins and 47 secs for maintenance!!

Come on Spike - knock him out.... quick!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,625 ✭✭✭✭Johner

I think this will be a late stoppage for Billy Joe.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,226 ✭✭✭qwabercd

Hand speed of Saunders is too much for spike. He lloked like tiring in round 4 or 5 but spike doesn't look like he has the power/energy to put him away in any case. Spike looks demoralised.

Huge 9th for Billy Joe. Could be over soon.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,755 ✭✭✭Dick phelan

Billy Joe just looks a class above Spike that ninth was decisive for Saunders

Just too classy for him. Spike is tough but very limited.

    Over yet?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,625 ✭✭✭✭Johner

    Over yet?

Just know. Easy points win for Billy Joe. I'm still not convinced by him as a pro though, he's very quick, technically very good and obviously is very classy but none of his punches seem to be hurtful and he doesn't seem to have the power. He's still improving but I don't see him troubling any world champions being honest. I think he will be a solid world level challenger without being quite top level.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,226 ✭✭✭qwabercd

    Over yet?

Over now. No scores yet but I'd imagine 120-108 Saunders x3

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,755 ✭✭✭Dick phelan

Hate that showboating at the end by saunders, very bad sportsmanship from Billy Joe, his fight though no disputes Spike is tough but not much ability

Agreed. Elite level boxers will walk him down (as Spike did to a certain extent) and will back it up with power. Still has time to improve but doesn't have the raw power imo. Don't like him either, seems cocky.

Edit - How was Spike ranked #4?

Saunders has no power, an elite middleweight would have taken Spike out in the mid rounds, Saunders has a lot to improve on he is still young of course but he just hasnt got power nothing to do with growing into himself, Saying he wants Qullin that a while off Qullin would beat him at this stage no doubt, Classy from Spike took defeat on the chin no excuses from him

Agree with this. His power just dosent look good enough for the elite level fighter and it will need to be in America .Her is 23 so maybe as he gets older it may develop but punching ower you either have it or not.Saunders dosent seem to hit hard enough despite his very good speed and technique

Well what did I say ....irish boxing is pathetic. Matthew hall beat spike fair and square but somehow spike got the decision. How could anyone look back at that performance and think he can beat billy joe saunders. Exposed tonight , where next ?

    Wasn't Billy the clear favourite?

Not sure how Gary was exposed in a fight he was expected to loose.

Gary always builds himself up as a better fighter than he is,a good bit away from this level, but fair play to him for giving it a go.

A rinse and repeat exercise for Saunders. Beat up on a punchbag. Saunders is fast, neat, slick and skilled. No power at all for that weight. He's on a Barker-Murray-Macklin level.

Buncey's hour on Monday at 1900 has Riddick Big Daddy Bowe on the couch. Looking forward to that.
