Basic questions about a beds

Mods please move if this is the wrong forum.

So I have very little clue about this. Recently moved into a new place (in Holland) and the bed is really very crappy. The frame is basic but in decent condition, so don't mind about that. It's queen sized, low, pine, kind of slatted bed, a bit like this one. Some of the slats are loose and fall down periodically, and one or two are broken (but I just replaced them with ones from the very bottom of the bed where they're not needed). The real trouble though is with the mattress, it's this thin (maybe 3cm) futon which lets you feel the real unevenness of the slats below.

So I think I want a thick spring mattress at the very least, would that work to even stuff out or would I need to buy a mattress base also to put on-top of the slats? (They seem fairly expensive) There's an IKEA near me, are they any use for mattresses? What kind of thing should I look out for? Is there really that much difference between the €100, €200 or €500 sprung mattersses. Is pocket sprung better than regular sprung? What about "active" pocket sprung?
Or are foam/latex mattresses better? I hate when mattresses sag in the middle or when the springs tilt and the edges make lumps that dig into you. I plan to have it at least for a few years so it'll be an investment in comfort and good night's sleep.

Should I just get new slats or is there a handy way to fix (as in adhere) the current ones in place so they don't keep falling down?

    Cheers.

We had a bed like that a few years ago and as a temporary measure we taped two or three layers of hard cardboard to the laths.
It was supposed to be temporary but it lasted for months.

Don't buy a cheap ikea mattress, buy a reasonable quality mattress.

The bed frame sounds fine. If your not happy with the slats, screw them in place or put some thin ply wood over them.

Last matress I bought was in bargain town glasnevin, think I paid €100, and it's grand. Loads of other places sell them too, €100-€200 should get you something.

After looking at them a bit I'm thinking of getting a €400 foam/latex mattress from IKEA. They seem to have a high rating on the net, and not so prone to spring wear/lumpiness.

Huh... resting plywood or hard cardboard over doesn't seem like a bad idea at all.

I bought a memory foam king mattress 2 years ago and do not like it at all..they get too hot which is the main complaint, they are very comfortable and if you like your heat ok i suppose ,they all say they are breathable etc but there not ,i bought a few mattress from this crowd in uk ,very happy http://www.mattressman.co.uk/ huge range and lots of reviews so that helps,ok so u cant sit on them and check but you could find a model in town u like and then see if they have it cheaper...having said this my gf likes the memory foam mattress but its too hot for me...
