    Hi,

My laptop went recently so i've had to use my girlfriends :(
However, browsing the internet is really slow. I'd say there's a 5/6 second delay after clicking on an iten, webpage, google search et all.
Its a new-ish Toshiba, only 2 years old so it shouldnt be this bad.

She hasnt used it much herself the past year, its not full of downloads or anything like that.
I've downloaded AVG and ran a full system scan and it came back with nothing.

Any idea whats causing it to be so slow?

    TIA.

    Hey,

Its probably just a build up of temporary files.

I had the same issue today with chrome on my 4gig Toshiba Netbook. Clear out the cache and cookes in your browser and it may help. I used CCleaner (Its free) on my machine today and got rid of about 50gig of crap and everything is running nice again.

Also if you are using chrome check what extensions are active. I had loads, silly me!

    :mad:Thanks.

Just used that Ccleaner there, it hasnt helped at all.
I've cleared everything and anything i've seen off the system. There's no way it should be like this.

Im using IE by the way. If i changed browsers would that help?

PS - how do i change browsers?? :o

It's pretty easy once you know how.

Go to this link http://www.google.com/chrome/ or this one http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/ .

Personally I prefer chrome. Just download the installer and then run it. Once it's done your good to go. If there's no change go to speedtest.net and run a speed test to see what the connection is like.

    Good luck 8)

The speed on my laptop was fine, and its about 3 years older than hers !
So there's something that causing it to be so slow.

i'll try switch browsers later on.

It may also be caused by:

    - Windows Updater downloading a lot of data
    - Your virus scanner doing a similar thing or running a scan automatically

Open Task Manager > Process tab > CPU column and see if there is a program hogging a large % of your CPU - it may give you an additional clue.

    Cheers.
Its not the virus scanner as i removed the old one she had on it and added an up to date AVG (free home one)
I ran a full system scan and it showed no bugs or anything wicked.

Will have a look at the usage later though.

IE memory is showing in processes are 143,000 k
    Is that normal??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,401 ✭✭✭DublinDilbert

Is it a laptop or netbook?

Toshiba mad some nice netbooks, but put windows 7 on them, which was a massive mistake. Install windows XP and it will run perfect. Many netbooks were powerfull enough to run windows 7

That sounds OK. It's the CPU usage is what you need to watch.

    It's jumping from 60% to 100%

    What's that based in?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,649 ✭✭✭b318isp

That's interesting. If you click on the CPU header of its column, it will sort the programs in order of usage. What programs are showing the highest % usage?

If it is "System Idle Process" that is fine.

    Cheers.

The highest % is internet explorer. Its taking up almost 100% of it.

Does it reduce after a time, say 30 minutes?

Do you know what amount of memory is fitted? what does it say under the Performance tab, in the Physical Memory seciton?

IE running @ 100% is not good so browsing with that will be crap!!!

Download Chrome or firefox and try browsing with one of those and see if it improves

Restart the box first after install to get rid of any outstanding IE processes and then when it restarts check the task manger before you launch the broswer to see what the usage is like - maybe wait a few minutes so that windows has loaded fully

No, i cant say it reduced, but it does seem to skip from a low % to 100% quite often.

I cant check the physical menu right now as im in work, but will check it later. I'd imagine its quite average.

    Looking at this now.
    Total memory is 1912
    Cached 448
    Available 428
    Free 0

On the bottom of the screen it says physical memory is 80%.
    Yours is 39%....
CPU usage is basically at 100% all the time with the odd drop.

Is it at 100% even with IE not running?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,775 ✭✭✭✭Slattsy

No its very low with Ie off, occasionally jumps to 34%.
    Physical memory solid at 48%

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,649 ✭✭✭b318isp

OK, try installing Chrome then and see how you get on.

Download and Run a scan with Malwarebytes from http://www.malwarebytes.org/

Run a scan and remove anything that it finds, reboot the computer.

Remove AVG and restart the computer.

Download and install a trial version of a good antivirus like Eset (http://www.eset.ie/ie/) and run a scan.

Finally download install and run Hijack this. Run a Scan and post the log file here.

Doing all this now. Malware scan running.

    Will update soon.

    3 items showed as Malware.
One was trojan and two were rogues.
No idea what that means but have successfully deleted them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,775 ✭✭✭✭Slattsy

Downloaded eset and ran a scan.
    Rebooted and no real change.

Will get rid of ie and try chrome or Firefox.

    Ok will do that later.

Also, i downloaded Chrome last night, and while it seems the cpu usage is down a bit % wise, it hasnt made browsing any faster.

    Don't forget this part:

Finally download install and run Hijack this. Run a Scan and post the log file here.

Also post scan logs for malwarebytes if possible.

I think it just needs a fresh installation to be honest. I remember any XP laptop/desktop I had I had to do a fresh installation every year or two because I installed/uninstalled a lot of stuff because it gets flustered and extremely slow and nearly impossible to remedy. Did my head in why the CPU was going to 70% with nothing really running. There's no real way around it. Problem is fixed though in Windows seven

It could do with a fresh install alright but if you do that you need to backup all your data and make sure that you can reinstall any programs you need again.

To try to remove some of the things slowing down IE run Hijackthis again and tick the options below and hit the "Remove Checked Items" button (if you really need any of them you can skip them but you should untick them all).

Go to Control Panel -> Add Remove Programs and remove any toolbars that you see in the list.

    Open Internet Explorer.

Click the Tools button, point to Manage Add-ons, and then click Enable or Disable Add-ons.

In the Show list, click one of the following options:

click Add-ons that have been used by Internet Explorer.

Go through the list of add ons and disable ones you dont need (I would just leave Flash / Java if they are there and delete the rest).

    Close IE and Reboot.

Open it again and see how it goes.

Did you try google chrome since.

To answer your previous question Hijack This gives a list of programs / services that run on startup as well as browser helper objects that IE uses and other network settings.

I meant to say the O23 (O23 - Service: @%SystemRoot% with file mssing at the end) listings are all issues too but thats for another day we will try to get the internet going properly first.

Thanks man appreciate you taking the time to have a look at that.

I had a feeling there were quite a few problems after running the hijack scan. It just means nothing to me.

I've stopped using ie and gone for chrome. And it does seem a little faster already.
