It's the name given to Limerick signal cabin. It was called Limerick Check because there was more than one cabin at the station for years. It got it's name from the days when trains used to be stopped beyond it for ticket and goods wagon checking before leaving. It is still in operation and it controls departures to and from the station, the station yard, part of the WRC and the main line towards Killonan Junction.

actualy it would have been for checking the tickets on incoming trains, not out going ones.

Limerick check is the second signal cabin at limerick. It controls the approach to Limerick station, the works, the old Foynes and Castlemungret lines (now disconnected), part of the WRC and part of the track heading towards Limerick Junction. It does not however control the final approach to the platforms or the platforms themselves, those are controlled from Limerick Station cabin. I believe the boundary between the two cabins is around the road bridge over the railway on the approach to the station.

Surely IE reconnected that by now.

Martin Morrissey, commercial manager with Shannon Foynes Port Company which has been lobbying for the Foynes line to be upgraded, said the company's position continued to be that the line was a "long-term strategic asset for the region, for the port and for the country".
He said he had received assurances from Iarnrod Eireann that the disconnection was temporary.

No point paying to connect something that you cant run a train on. Even when that was said I don’t think it was possible to run a train on it so it didn’t matter if it was connected or not.

By disconnecting it there is a guarantee that nothing can / will run on it.

Not quite true, they could easily send the lads out on a jaunt once a year on a Velocipede with a can of Roundup on the back, as long as the lads were paid drivers rates for the day. :D

The points at the junction were due replacing so they would have been ripped up, either now or when the station is relaid along with new signaling installed. It isn't as if new traffic is lost on the basis that it can't access the line tomorrow.

Limerick County Council tried to list the Foynes line but IE successfully overturned the listing in court.

List it ? As in like a listed structure ?

Yep, exactly. IE contested it on the grounds that any work on the line would have required planning permission.

Limerick County Council put a preservation order on the Foynes line in 2005, presumably well intentioned to keep it in sito. CIE had to go to the High Court to have it expunged as it meant that any works done on the line (including track laying and lifting) now required planning permission.

Doubtless this ill conceived exercise cost both parties oodles of money with zero gain for the general public.

Except Losty that CIE didn't do any works on the line anyway... not improvement works anyway. I think it would be fair to say that CIE got what they wanted - a spend of small money to avoid LCC making them spend somewhat larger money to keep the line in the sort of nick NTA are making them do between Rosslare and Belview.

There was talk for a while about a signalling project in Limerick area, presumably involving closing Limerick check, and raising of a 5mph limit through the yard area which added undue delay to all arriving/departing services at Colbert. Ring a bell for anyone?

The Foynes line has a better chance of being restored to service than many if not indeed all the others that are out of service.

Quite a lot of Zinc prospecting in SE Limerick which if converted to active mining would require transport to the nearest port...which is Foynes where Silvermines used to go. Is the 'club' on the direct alignement Limerick Station <> Foynes/Cork still in use or could one also punt for its demolition and restoration of the direct connection too???

yes I agree Foynes stands a better chance than most as it is a freight -only line and could be re-opened much more cheaply
