Hello folks! Just a quick question...

Lately I've found myself wanting to say a certain phrase that I'm not entirely sure how to say. I've been winging it and I'm being (mostly) understood. But I'd love to get it right.....例えば、英語で......

John said "whatever" to me yesterday.
John told me "whatever" yesterday. どちでもういい

I say something along the lines of....

    昨日ジョンは私に"何何"言った。

    Just doesn't feel right.

I could be wrong but could say

    昨日ジョンが”何何”って

and drop the 私に (you could always add it afterwards while pointing your index finger toward your nose if theres some confusion as to who john could have said such a thing to :) )

The particle to mark what someone said is と "to" or って "-tte".

So your example would be 昨日ジョンは≪なになに≫と言いました。

for the verb 言う it is also common to use te form and いる

so your example would be 。。。と言っていた。
    or shortened to 。。。って言ってた。

i'm sure just the verb 言う is fine too though? please correct if I'm wrong!
