Have an I pad 2 which I love but need a laptop, looking at dell I could get a pretty good spec for half the price of MacBooks are they really that much better.

    Thanks

All depends on what you require from the laptop. What will you be primarily using it for? Design, audio production or just browsing the internet?

The Mac Operating System is a little different to Windows but is a little more intuitive but it's horses for courses really. Best thing would be to go to a store that sells MacBook's and have a play around with it if you're unfamiliar with it.

We could give you a little more help if you were a bit more specific with your requirements from the laptop.

You can do all that on an iPad.

RAW or JPEG, and if RAW, what do you edit them with?

It's difficult to explain why a MacBook is better than a €500 Dell. You have to use one. But put it this way, if you love your iPad and you want a laptop that will you love just as much, get a MacBook. But if you just want a cheap laptop that does what you what you need, get a Dell.

that its utterly irrelevant when deciding between pc or mac. They are handled identically on both machines. Both machines will do what you want, you will just have a greatly increased experience doing it on a mac. I have been using mac for years now and would never go back. I would use them mainly for Photo editing or Final Cut (the original reason I went mac)

I know it's a big price difference but MacBooks really do stand the test of time. Mine is 8 or 9 years old and still going strong. I know of people that have gone through 2 or 3 laptops in that time.

Dells have a wide range of prices. You could buy a Dell laptop for €2000 or €350. They are obviously not the same quality. So comparing a €500 budget Dell with a High End €1000+ Macbook isn't really a valid comparison. There isn't a cheap entry level laptop in Apples Range. TBH there isn't any budget entry to the Apple, the cheapest is the Mac Mini €659 and then you still have to get a screen etc.

So the question isn't about laptop spec. The question is, do you want to spend 1000 to get the Apple experience. For many people the answer is yes. Only you can decide is that's something you want to do.

That isn't really the correct question. The question is do you want to spend 500 and get an inferior qualit laptop or ~1000 on an equivalent quality Dell or on an Apple and get the apple experience.

I think its simpler than that. To get into Apple you need to pay 1000 ish.

To do "Internet e mail word processing photos and watching movies" you could do on nearly anything.

Build quality, and performance is simply about spending more.
