    I came across this page:

    http://wiki.redbrick.dcu.ie/mw/Emo

Does anyone else find this very disturbing?Promoting self harm/suicide. Surely DCU wouldn't be too happy with one of their societies being associated with this page.I'm all for freedom of speech and people having their own views but I just find that page too much.

    What does everyone think?

I find your comment disturbing and insensitive, and would kindly ask you to gtfo.

I'd like to preface this post with the following. "It's a joke".

Yes, you see, there are these things which are not meant seriously called jokes, they're quite funny sometimes. Some people think people such as Lee Evans might make jokes, but I'd disagree, as I don't find him funny. Someone like Dara O'Briain or maybe Andrew Maxwell. They make jokes.

Regardless, the Emo page on the RB wiki is a joke. Nobody takes it seriously.

Also, may I remind you that saying Redbrick promtes suicide and self-harm is a bit distasteful, bearing in mind what happened last year with Paul Bunbury. The society as a whole was totally shaken, understandably, and I don't think the members (at least, this is my view) would take too kindly to being told they promote suicide just because there's a joke page with quotes from users being taken out of context or else things they said jokingly. (Obviously stuff like gizmo's one is a bit of a laugh).

Essentially, cop on. It's a joke. People mess around sometimes. It's a bit of fun. It's not serious. Stop taking things so seriously.

Perhaps his contribution to the page should be removed?

I'm assuming you're referring to Paul, and I'll go ahead with that.

I disagree. A few of us had this discussion last night, he was fully aware of the page, and even contributed at some point for other people's sections.

I don't think anything should be removed unless the family requests it, to be honest.

I think its very uncomfortable having a post from him on there saying what it does, particularly the last part of it, considering what happened.

I'm sure he wouldn't mind one bit but you have to admit it takes away from the "joke" aspect doesn't it? Sad and serious rather than funny.

I'm just going to put this quote from one of the people who was involved in that discussion here.

"He was a close friend and I would be deeply offended if someone removed memorabilia from any redbrick sites that reminded me of him, regardless of the content."

Yes, the situation was sad. Yes, it still is sad. And yes, I still think about him even though we weren't that close. But no, I don't think it should be removed.

You can't be offended for someone. If there's a section about you up there, go ahead, remove it, nobody cares, but you can't see something about someone else and feel offended for them. That's not how it works.

I'm not feeling offended for anyone else, especially not Paul. I knew him too and I sincerely doubt he would at all be bothered about it.

But if someone genuinely has concerns about the page, as the OP seems to have (if he/she is not a redbrick member having a bit of a laugh, which I suspected until you posted), and others may too, I don't see how you can maintain that the page is just a joke given what content is on it and what happened subsequently. How can the page be a bit of a laugh when that is there, my heart sank when I read it and the whole page makes for serious reading after that, I didn't find it funny.

Think about how it looks, you have someone who died so tragically talking about suicide pacts followed by loads of posts about people cutting or killing themselves.

In that context I don't think it is funny at all and is in rather bad taste to have that there. I'm not getting offended on behalf of anyone I'm just saying how I feel about it.

The page itself is a joke. It has always been a joke, and always will be a joke.
People have concerns over a lot of things, however Paul's family are aware of the wiki, as are his close friends from college. Paul himself directed me to that page, to get an idea of the sort of in-jokes that are in the society.

Paul himself found it funny. I found it funny then, and still raises some smiles today. Why should we remove it because of the circumstances that were the reason Paul left us?

I'm all for lack of offending, but I'd find it more offensive to remove content about Paul, and content he found funny. It's not exactly feasible to go back to him and find more funny content and more things to put onto our wiki about him any more

You might think it's funny, I don't. Not in the slightest given what happened. I never demanded anything but merely suggested, in loght of the OPs complaint it doesn't look good. Leave it be if you think its still such a good joke and something to chuckle over, fair enough if you feel that way, I suppose I can understand why, but I don't agree. No need whatsoever to throw stuff like that out there trying to make me feel like a dick for making a suggestion, I know he can't write up anything else on the wiki ffs, are you serious?

I do not think that boards.ie is the place to be having this discussion.

GRMA (and anyone else who is not happy with the page) perhaps you should contact Redbrick directly if you wish to discuss the page further.

    Thread locked.
