EAC Fail on Ford Fiesta 2003

Just the other day when driving I got a message flashing up on the dash screen saying EAC Fail. When I turned off the car and back on again it was gone, everything fine.

Over the last few months I have also had the problem of the speedometer needle occasionally bouncing all over the place for a few minutes, before settling back to normal.

Is there a serious fault in the car? Any Ideas much appreciated.

Also, I don't think it is possible to get the error code read now that the EAC fail stopped or can I still get the error code if I hook up a code reader machine thing?

    Thanks in advance.

Hi Peter - any rough idea for what that replacement could cost?

Hi I had that problem with the EAC fail on and off for a couple of years with my 04 Ford Fiesta. My own mechanic did work on it twice. Each time it was worked on it would be fine for a while and then it would seem to suddenly loose power and thankfully I was able each time to pull over safely. I didnt trust the car and was thinking about getting rid but couldn't afford a new one. The car is a 1.4 Ghia, it has low mileage and otherwise it is in great condition, so I took a gamble on getting it fixed once again and brought it to a Ford dealership. I spent a few hundred euros on their reassurance that it was a common problem And that they were sure they could fix it.
It worked ok again after that for about a week and then conked out. I was on the point of despair. After having spent so much money I was really annoyed, I went back and they said they would fix it without another charge. All the car needed then was a computer update.
The good news is it has been going fine with no more EAC fails for the last year but it was a load of hassle.
Im thankful that the ford mechanics fixed my car but I dont know if I totally trust their workmanship or think that their work is necessarily of a better standard or that they use better parts than private mechanics. The ford mechanics put clips on to my car that were not standard ones and I later developed problems with coolant leaking because the clips were eating into the rubber. My own mechanic asked where I had the work done and knew it wasnt his work because of the clips. He took them off and showed them to me and compared them with standard ones. They looked like those metal bands you put around a garden hose and use a screwdriver to tighten. Its hard for someone like me who has no knowledge of cars to get something fixed and to trust mechanics. I do trust my own mechanic but maybe he doesnt have all the facilities available to him in a ford dealership and yet he seemed to use better parts for a small job that came up. Its a pity.
