ram upgrade

I am trying to upgrade ram in a dimension 4600 for my folks house. There was two of the 256mb seen here and I bought two of the the 1gb seen here. The new 1gb ram is not working for me though. Any ideas why not? All suggestions most welcome.

Looks like the new ones you bought are ECC which are usually used in servers. What you need is Non-ECC memory such as this from Amazon:

A good site for checking what kind of RAM you need is www.crucial.com as it can scan your computer or you can enter the details if you arent on the one you want to upgrade.

try sticking in the 1Gb chip after removing the 256. It is possible to use ECC or non ECC in most desktops but not both together.

Have tried that, the pc just beeps a few times and doesnt start :-(

Go onto adverts.ie. You'll get 2GB of DDR400 reasonably enough.

Thats where I got the upgrade memory :-) I'll have another look
