Its quite obvious when your using the DART that the leap knows how much to charge as you tag on and off. Same on the luas. But when travelling between stages on the bus, how does the leap know how much to charge as you only tag on?

    Using a Leap Card
For City Centre, short (1 –3 stages), medium (4 –7 stages) and long (8–13 stages) journeys tell the driver your destination and hold your Leap Card to the target on the driver’s ticket machine and the correct fare will be deducted from your Travel Credit. For longer journeys (over 13 stages) use the Leap Card Validator on the right hand side as you enter the bus and the flat fare will be deducted from your Travel Credit. If you are unsure which fare applies to your journey, ask the driver.

When you tag on you get charged the maximum fare, if you want a lower fare for only travelling a shorter distance or the City Centre fare you must not use the validator inside the door but go to the driver and place your leap card on the drivers validator and tell her/him your destination and they should charge the correct fare but you should check this as some drivers don't properly update the stages on the machines.
