    Hi guys

I have a 99 Audi A6 1.9 TDi and she has been just fantastic.

The time has come though for a change as I am moving to a new job with a fairly long commute and i need a lot more reliability and i make out that the audi is doing 30 mpg at the moment so there is clearly something wrong

I was looking to pick up a 2010 Toyota corrola - does any one have experience of this car ? Should be able to get 55 mpg + on this and low car tax along with reliability etc.

Im willing to spend 15k on a car so if anyone knows of a car that will do even more mpg that this then I would appreciate it

You might not want to hear this, but if someone asked me to choose between an old, free, proven & reliable A6 TDi or spending €15k on a 3 year old Corolla D4D for a long commute, I would pick the Audi.

You will have a long wait to claim back the €15k based on reduced tax and fuel!

The A6 would be better for long commutes, I'd guess. 30MPG sounds very low, you should be in the high 30's or early 40's - so maybe something needs to be addressed there.

    Consider perhaps a 2004/5 A4 TDi...as an intermediate solution!

I dont want to spend any money either but i need a new car in fairness. Its hard to get a 2004 / 2005 Audi with low mileage and i would need it with low mileage

The Toyota Corolla is not as nice a car as it once was and if I was doing a long commute every day I would want to be sitting in something nicer. As for the mpg figures that manufactures give, they are all wildly optimistic but from something the size of the Corolla I would expect to see 50+ minimum if you are just going along the at 100KM/H. As for what car to get these are well regarded Hyundai i30 but I would consider going with a bigger, more comfortable car or fixing the Audi, it will cost a lot less than 15K to put right and will be a lot nicer than driving something bought just for fuel economy

Corolla is all wrong. Its laid out really badly. Its got a massive long nose, a long low boot, the seats are too low, no cruise control on any model, no lumbar support, small seats, poor rear legroom, poor adjustment on the seat, steering wheel is too low if you're any way tall.

The reliability isn't top of the class either so it doesn't even have that trump card.

well yeah i will fix the audi , she is getting battered though.

whats the best bigger car for mpg ?

Have a look at the Seat Leon 1.6TDI. You will pick up a really good 2011 one within your budget. They are incredibly good on fuel and a much nicer place to be than a Corolla.

If you feel the Audi's getting battered then I guess it's time to move on, you sound like you got enough out of it.

They are not fast or exciting but should be reliable and give great mgp, the same engine as the Seat Geogre just mentioned

Once its serviced right it would be.

the volvo is nice, but you can also get 09, 3 series for that money with the same spec, cheap tax and a good bit more power in the bm...

    http://www.carzone.ie/search/BMW/3-Series/320-E90-/33413648275805190/advert?channel=CARS

(Assuming neither has been clocked as mileage seems low for diesels)

It says 'repair history available' in the description, dont like the sound of that.

Little high on the mileage, but if it gets near the claimed MPG you're laughing.

Much nicer place to sit that a crappy Carroll or whatever

No, doesn't seem to be. Doubt you'd get a bluemotion CC in your budget. Think that engine only came to market about 2010/2011

Octavia Greenline?? Basically the skoda badge for bluemotion. Might want to check that price include VRT...

My dad does alot of driving he gets 61 mpg out of our 1.6tdi octavia and he is not a slow driver by any means. We have an older 1.9tdi octavia and that Maxes out at about 54 mpg. A passat won't do 61 mpg blue motion or not they are a heavier car. I assume a 1.6 tdi golf would do similar to the octavia but I'm not sure. But at the end of the day even with the 1.6tdi octavia if your not doing a serious amount of driving and long trips it will only do 55 mpg. There is months my dad has done 8k km plus. How far is your commute op. still there is nothing wrong with 55mpg tipping around.

    Or a Superb Greenline.

Closer to your A6 in size and comfort

would i be better off going to the uk for this ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 481 ✭✭Matthewjohn

I don't think so the savings aren't as good in the UK as they once were.

For the what you want to spend you could getting something far better than a toyota corolla.
A few of my family members have brought cars from this garage The Woodland Motor Company in Kilcolgan, Co Galway.
They heard about this garage from people they knew and work colleges.
They have been happy with the cars they brought.
If you look up http://www.woodlandmotorco.ie they have some very nice cars for around what you want to spend.

    Low mileage with decent economy.
    Comfortable enough.
    390 tax
and a bit of power to go with it.

The back of that car looks wrong, and the 320d badge is slightly wrong, a sign its had a tip on the back is when the badge moves towards the right corner i so wrong place or the wrong font on the badge .

    Ok guys

thanks for all of this, I have now had a change of heart. I make out if the car will hit 50 mpg then my commute will cost 57 euro and if it does 60 mpg then it will cost 48 euro

    so...

the savings of a new car just are not there . I could pick up this nice 407 for 6k

    http://www.carzone.ie/search/Peugeot/407/ST-COMFO/31813598123079910/advert?channel=CARS

Car tax would be 540 per year so thats around 400 a year extra - if you multiply this by 5 years then its 2000 euro

If i get 50 mpg from the peugeot then 10 per week extra , 520 per year. 5 years - 2500 - round up to 3000 for other driving

Thats 5000 + 6k for the car = 11000 whereas I was looking at a toyota corolla diesel for 14500 and hoping to get 60 mpg from it

    Now my question is

    1. WIll i get 50 mpg from a mondeo or peugeot 407 ?
    2. WOuld they cost me lots in repairs , ill be doing 22000 miles per year

Obviously if i went older then i could get a more comfy car which will be important but i need 50 mpg minimum!!

    What ye think ?
