Not really IMO. It might be considered acceptable if it comes with Windows, monitor and keyboard, otherwise no.

Depending on your son's needs (what will the comp be used for? Does he care about fancy graphics in games? Etc etc). I'm guessing something equivalent sub-€400 can be specced.

Check out this thread, seems like a reasonable machine and good for light gaming also.

It seems hardwareversand is the place to be or buy.

Could someone please spec me a €500 +/- say €600 with monitor.

My neighbour will put it together.

We want Intel and not forgetting he's still a kid and his next PC will be for himself to sort out.

    Many thanks. JD.

You might not need to spend so much really. Is there a particular reason you want Intel? Honestly both CPUs generally have comparable price:performance ratios.

    How about something like this?

    Item|Price
    Intel Core i3-3220 Box, LGA1155|€105.05
    ASRock B75M-GL R2.0, Sockel 1155, mATX|€53.54
    BitFenix Merc Alpha|€33.20
    Super-Flower Amazon 80Plus 450W|€46.35
    8GB-Kit G.Skill PC3-10667U CL9|€51.62
    Seagate Barracuda 7200 500GB SATA 6GB's|€47.79
    HIS HD 7770 GDDR5 1024MB DVI HDMI 2xMiniDP|€99.74
    LG Flatron IPS234V|€149.00
    Shipping|€18.99
    Total|€605.28

You could pick a cheaper monitor if you wanted to reduce the cost.

That's an awesome build for the price, especially considering the IPS monitor. Here's hoping the OP doesn't need Windows.

If it wasn't very heavy on the gaming, you could get the 5800K APU.
I know you said Intel, but you might as well know what's out there. Graphics would be weaker but still sufficient to run the bulk of games reasonably well. It would save you the price of the graphics card as they are integrated onto the processor chip (but much more powerful than traditional integrated graphics). The extra funds could be added to getting a solid state drive which would give you fast boot ups and a more responsive system.

If graphics was to become a bigger priority, which I suppose it would for a teenager, the Intel system would have better for that area.

    He intends to use XP.

Just to note, if the plans playing anything recent, or in the future, most games require at least Vista. XP is old and if a machine is going to be designed with gaming in mind, XP is quite redundant as most modern games will not run on it.

I see now using XP brings up issues.

Oh oh so much to know.

Just to conclude, I have gone with my friends nephew who has fixed and installed for us in the past.

Reason: I know very little about PC's and the like, he's local and very reliable so if anything goes wrong he will sort it.

When the young lad gets his next PC I would say it will be a self build and he can take care of the whole thing.:P

    Many thanks for the info.:)
