    Hello,

hopefully some kind soul here can help me with my current issue.

So I recently built a new rig:

    Asus mobo P8H67-M PRO // ASRock Z77 Pro 4
    Superflower golden king 550w psu.
    8gigs corsair xms DDR3 1600mhz.
Intel Core i5-2550K with stock cooler.
Asus GTX 580 Direct CU 1.5 gig

When I put it all together, the light on the mobo was a solid green.
I hit the power button, case light powered on for like half a second, fans began to spin for a second and then immediately it turned off, with a "click" noise from the psu.

I removed the GPU for testing since the mobo has onboard graphics too.
and only left 1 stick of RAM

I cleared the CMOS, removed the battery, nothing, same issue.

I have tested the psu in another system, works fine.
tested 3 other PSUs on the new build, all giving the same issue

I have also tested 2 other motherboards, one asus and one asrock. All giving the same issue.

I always made sure that all power cables were firmly connected, main power and 2 cpu power plugs.
CPU is seated correctly with fan plugged in.

Tonight I will try with other ram I borrowed from work.

What I would really like is any suggestions from people here as to what might be causing the issue.

As far as I can tell, its not the PSU, dont think its the RAM (would have thought it would still post), really dont think its the motherboard.

Could I have gotten a dead CPU?

Is there some safety thing on the mobo that I haven't done yet?

...thanks in advance for any responses.

    EDIT

Video here looks like it has the exact same problem...

The CPU and RAM are the onlny things in common, so it's one of those.

Yeah could be the case, I have 2 sticks of RAM borrowed from IT which I will try this evening when I get home, if that fails, I can only conclude its the CPU.

But I guess that just leads to 2 more questions for me...

What are the odds of getting a DOA processor?

Does a DOA processor prevent a computer from even powering up?

Well RAM is easy. Try one stick, then same stick in different slot, then other stick in first slot, and other stick in second slot. This works unless you were really unlucky and got two dead DIMMs.

As for DOA CPU, very unlikely, but it does happen. And yes, the system won't power up if it's borked. It might for a split second, but that's it.

I tried both sticks of RAM on their own in the different slots.

To be honest my suspicion is the CPU, I guess I will find out tonight. worst case I can order a new one :)

If your CPU is DOA you should be able to RMA it without any problems.

Unless of course that's what you meant by ordering a new one, just don't want you shelling out for a new one when you don't have to.

You're right there of course, however I got most of the rig from work.
The CPU was brand new when I first installed it however.

I doubt there is a receipt lying around anywhere for it. I just wish I had another one to test it before shelling out for a new one :)

So, the new ram didn't help. Same result.

Will head to a store today nearby and try with a new CPU :(

OP please state exactly what motherboard and exactly what chip you have.

Ivy bridge chips will not work in some older motherboards without a bios upgrade.

Ah yeah, sorry forgot to update the spec.

so I tried with 3 different motherboards...

twice with 2 Asus boards.. P8H67-M PRO
once with a new ASRock Z77 Pro 4

    2 different types of RAM

    Corsair XMS3 DDR3 1600mhz (2x 4gigs) tried 1 stick and 2 in various slots
    Kingston Hyper X DDR3 1600mhz

    Processor is...

Intel Core i5-2550K with stock cooler.

    I have tried...

    4 different power supplies
    Super flower 550w
    Corsair 550w
    2 non brand 450w

    3 different motherboards

    2 different sets of ram

all mobo's have onboard graphics, have tried with and without added graphics cards.

I have removed the HDD, theres no optical drive connected

I made sure all power connectors were securely connected and have tried all motherboards both inside and outside of the case (on non conductive surface)

as this stage, the only thing left for me to switch is the CPU :(

Have dropped the mobo and CPU into the local computer place for testing/new cpu installation.

will wait and see how it goes :)

    Hey,

so its all sorted and fixed now.
Thank you everyone for the help and suggestions.

As it turned out the CPU was in fact dead :(

I dropped it into the local computer place near work for testing and they installed and new CPU for me. All working now, and posting from the new computer. Happy days!
