Anyone have any thoughts on the above?

Intel HD graphics is perfectly fine to play full HD video.

The Core i3 is of the previous generation, see if you can find a Core i3-3110M.

    I wouldn't buy an AMD laptop unless it's an A-8 or A-10.

The i3-3110M is $628 whilst the current is only $428, so can't see my mate going for it.

Aye, have been wary of the AMDs since I went looking for an AMD myself, and found out that I should steer clear.

Well, $428 is 330 yoyos, for little more you'll get an Ivy Bridge Core i3 laptop in Ireland (LD had a PB i3-3110M for €330 but it's sold out now). So it isn't exactly a great deal.

    Who is "LD"?

Would an A8-4555M be of any use? It's $428 (so about €327). My mate is a slight brand snob, going for HP as they've never given him problems (but I'm adding Lenovo into my search), thus why most of my results are HP. I see no point in going for a Refurb, on the off chance that whatever caused the refurb comes back.

Also, I'm seeing a lot of the Intel B960, but in comparison to the i3-2328M, there doesn't seem to be that much of a difference, apart from more threads (4 compared to two), and a bit more cache (1.5MB compared to 1MB). I'm guessing this matters when playing the hi-def films, though.

Looking through the laptopsdirect.ie and seeing lots of choice, with the only bad thing being the €17.50 postal charge. How reputable are LD?

The CPU is comparable to a mobile Core i3 processor of the 2nd generation, the graphics compares to a GT 620M. Slightly better than the other HP with a Sandy Bridge CPU, I'd say.

He has found best buy, it seems. The one he picked has no DVD drive (which he wants), but I found this one with a 3rd generation i3 (3110M), so for $419 / €320 I'm telling him to buy it. From the reviews, it looks like a fairly recent model.

Just found out that he got himself this, with a "Intel® Pentium® processor B960". From what I read, the B960 ain't bad, but not great, and nothing near an i3. I'm thinking he asked the sales guy a question (cheapest laptop that can play HD movies), and got this. Ah well. At $329 / €250 he'll have gotten what he paid for.

Not the worst laptop you can buy for 250 yoyos... USB 3.0, HDMI and best of all, it ain't no stinkin' HP. ;)
