I hope someone can help me as I have no real experience with cameras other than simple point and shoot. I am looking for a camera that takes an excellent picture thats not huge, maybe something you could fit in your pocket thats really user friendly. My budget can go to around 500, any recommendations?:)

You could pick up a Nikon d5100 for that price. I'm a canon user but from friends experience they're really good. I'm getting one tomorrow for our society, I could tell you what it's like first hand if you want
Sorry didn't see you were looking for a pocket sized camera. Canon s100 is really nice

Have a look at the Panasonic LX7.

I got one to supplement my SLR and I find it great.

    Bought it here. http://www.procamerashop.co.uk/panasonic-lumix-dmc-lx7-digital-camera-white-5647.html

    Arrived in 3 days

Lack of a viewfinder on the panasonic and sony would turn me off. I know you can get an add on one for the panasonic but it adds a decent chunk to the price.
Maybe a Fuji x100? Price come down a lot since the release of the x100s
