Have desktop now and miss the fn key on laptops for doing this as I need to adjust it regularly.

Is there a slider bar that could be left on the taskbar, or even a keyboard that would do the job.

as far as I know such controls are only on monitors

laptops are a special case where the monitor is actaully built in so the controls are accessible.

which desktop / video card as sometime they have drivers that let you adjust brightness or turn down the signal, it's up to the monitor to respond to that

MY keyboard has ,f5, f6 , brightness ,up ,down.
some pcs have fn key , plus function key, up,down, brightness ,
Look on the keyboard for a brightness symbol, circle icon on function keys.

And all of the above would work fine when plugged into a laptop.

They have no direct connection to the monitor though.
