If a car has a shudder when moving off in first gear or when reversing what causes this problem ? There was a new clutch fitted 5k miles ago, would it be the flywheel ?

    Any ideas ?

    What make and year?
Is the whole car shuddering or just the steering wheel, pedals?

Engine or gearbox mount possibly. The lower gearbox mount on my van went and it done this. It stops the engine twisting as you accelerate and engine brake.

Its a Corolla 99, its shuddering at the front and its only when engaging the biting point in first or reverse ,steering wheel and pedals dont vibrate at all.

Had a look at the mounts, one was missing a bolt but thats been replaced but its still the same.

Its likely that the face of the flywheel was scored or overheated by the old clutch spinning. If this is the case then you will certainly get a less then smooth clutch engagement.

This probably isn't relevant at all, but with my last car it would shudder like crazy taking off in 1st, going into second and in reverse if you put the shoe down any little bit.

Changed the spark plugs, leads and air filter... no shudder anymore was like a different car. So might be worth checking?

That would have been a misfire from the engine, not a shudder from the transmission/clutch.

Ah ok sorry, the whole car was jumping so I had no idea where it was coming from! :pac:

Was just talking to the owner and after a bit of investigation it turns out that the front gear box mounting has two bolts and one was missing, this has been replaced now and the car is driving perfectly.

    Thanks..
