DCU or UCD

Im not sure whether to put UCD or DCU first on ny CAO, I'm going to put down Commerce International in UCD or International Business in DCU, which are almost identical in terms of modules, so I'm wondering which college would be better in terms of enjoyment, social life, and making new friends, cause that's what it has come down to. I will join societies and sports clubs, so its not a matter of not getting involved, but which will I actually enjoy more? I'm also putting this on the UCD forum to get both sides

I've attended both colleges (UCD for a year and a half and DCU for 2 years now). I really feel that it depends on your personality and what you're looking for out of college life. For example, it takes me time to make new friends and I'm not the most outgoing person so UCD didn't really suit me. The college is VERY big, to the extent that people you meet on say, a night out, you're likely to never bump into again. My lectures were massive and it was hard to get to know people in my class as a result. UCD is also further from town and is "isolated" as a result i.e. many people never leave the campus from one end of the week to another.

DCU suits me better because it's smaller. The course I'm studying has small class sizes and thus it was very easy to get to know people. It's closer to town and you get more of a "living in Dublin" experience than in UCD.

Personally, I feel that UCD has better quality societies (this isn't a dig at DCU societies at all, which are still fantastic but I guess with a bigger student population as in UCD you thus have a bigger pool of dedicated people to put their time into the runnings of the society). However, DCU also has some fantastic societies. It depends on your interests too - there are some societies that exist in DCU but don't in UCD and vice versa. Do a bit of research into what clubs/socs you'd be interested in.

Really, it's hard to say which college will suit you better as everyone is different. DCU suits me perfectly but I knew people in UCD who absolutely thrived on the environment there.

Thanks for the reply Konata, I am an outgoing person and would usually have no problem making friends, but will this be tough in UCD as its so big, my school at the moment is small enough (60 in my year), will the small size of DCU be beneficial or will it not matter as I aim to join the societies and go out a lot in either college. I like the fact that my year atm is small, will this make me like DCU more, or is it the bigger the better? Also, a lot of people in my year have DCU on the CAO, no one has UCD at the top.

I knew one person when I came to DCU (and she wasn't even in my school or anything), and it's the best decision I've ever made.

It's hard for any of us to tell you what decision to make, though. Only you can do that.
