Well, Amazon have the 960GB drive listed for £393. The seller doesn't ship to Ireland, so I can't get an exact price, but Google says around €470, which is almost exactly what $600 should be from a direct conversion from US prices (which never happens) so it's actually very cheap.

yeah that is a much better price, run it through flubit and see if you get a discount! :)

Okay, I am a bit out of date with things. whats so fancy about this ssd? The old crucial has almost same speeds and price per gb stayed the same.

Is the main point extra reliability and more rewriting cycles?

The main point is that they have a 1TB model that doesn't cost €3,000. ;)
(There's also a 480GB mSATA model, previous largest was 256GB)

Also, those prices should fall a little bit in the coming weeks.

The fancy bit is the 960gb :).
I'm going to get one :D. Just sold one of my spare pc's today also and was wondering what to do with the cash :P
Finally I can put all my games on an ssd :D

Edit: Thanks alot Serephucus :D. I will wait a few weeks and when the price settles will pick one up :)

Think I just might have to pick one of these for my M1 build around September.

With 1TB SSDs that can only get cheaper than this, I don't see myself using anything but solid state from now on. (With the exception of my server of course)

It's about time. Only had time to skim over the reviews. Not bad overall. I think if it was a choice between this and the 840 Pro, I'd probably go with the 840 Pro. They'd want to bring the prices down to just over the 840 level to make it a clear pricewise winner.

Agreed. Combined with the bit of extra space you get (and when we're talking 480/512, it's quite a bit) the 840 Pro is definitely the better buy, not to mention the extra two years of warranty you get with it.

That said, the M500 is (for the moment) the only 1TB option in town, and for me personally, 512GB is probably slightly on the small side for a Steam drive.

i was holding out on finishing my build for a while to see how these turned out. i think i'll be going with a 128gb 840 pro as my boot drive and pick one of these up at a later date, in a couple of months or so

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,181 ✭✭✭Serephucus

Yup, that's where I'm at presently. I'm definitely moving to an ITX Haswell system (might as well, given that I'd have to sell my motherboard anyway, etc.) I'm just not sure what case I'll be going for, but I'm going to try to go all solid state. Might keep my current 128GB 830, or go for a 256GB Pro, along-side one of these.

unfortunately ill still have to keep one or two mechanical hard drives in mine, but it will be nice to have them just for storage alone, lots of video. would i be losing much by connecting sata 3 mech. hard drives via a sata 2 connection? i was thinking not but i dont really know for sure, both my sata 3 ports would be taken up if i went with my plan

No, the difference would be negligible.
If you have a lot of video, you could get a NAS, put in the HDDs and have the videos available to multiple computers/tv. That way the bulk is gone and the essentials are kept locally.

That's what I ended up doing. I've been buying HDDs in pairs since my first rig, and it's just such a huge piece of mind, that I don't like going without it. As a result I end up with a bunch of mechanical drives (up to six at the moment). They were moved to a server before Christmas, and it's been great. Backups, downloads, MC servers, all handled from a box in the corner.

Side-note: Anyone looking for a server case, the Deep Silence 1 from Nanoxia is a must. The one and only reason being that you can buy extra HDD cages, so you can fit up to 20 (that's not a typo) HDDs in the case assuming nothing on your motherboard gets in the way.

Side note: Samsung has just announced it's 128GB NAND chips. We can expect more 1TB-class SSDs in a couple of months (most likely).
