Qualifying for JSB

Hi all, I have been unemployed for 10 months and my JSB will be coming to an end soon, I won't qualify for JSA as my wife earns a good salary. This just got me thinking, I was working for 9 years before the redundancy. How long do you have to 'pay into' the system in order to qualify for JSB?, if for instance I am offered a job after my 312 days runs out, how long would I have to work before I can claim JSB again? (purely hypothetical but I never really understood how this works)
    Thanks!

    qualifying for Jobseeker's Benefit

You can re-qualify for JB if:
    • You have used up your full JB entitlement (either 9 or 6 months) and
    • You have paid 13 PRSI contributions for at least 13 weeks (these contributions can be counted only after you have claimed at least 156 days (6 months) of JB)

Even if you don't qualify for JA payments make sure that you continue to sign for PRSI credits in order to keep your records intact:

    From welfare.ie:

If you are unemployed and you do not qualify for an unemployment payment, you can sign-on for credits at your local Social Welfare Office to keep your social insurance record up-to-date as long as you qualify for credits. You will get a credit for each full week of proven unemployment. You must be available for work, genuinely seeking work and capable of work.

If you are signing on for credits only, the signing arrangements may vary slightly in each Social Welfare Local Office. Contact your local Social Welfare Office for details.

So does this mean that if you are on JB for the full term and then return to work for 13 weeks, if you lost that job you would qualify for another full term (9 months) of JB ?

    Yes

Hmmm, I didn't realise this. I was on JSB for a year, switched to JSA for a week or two, then worked for 15 weeks. I had to reapply for JSA, and am still waiting a decision on it. They seem to do things differently in each office, which isn't really fair

I think that once you go onto JSA the rules change.

ah I see! But surely it's very difficult to use up your full JSB, but not go on to JSA, you would have to be very exact with your dates.

Do you get JB if you quit your job of your own accord?, after being back in work for 4 months it has become quite clear that I am far worse off financially being back at work.

You can be disqualified from a payment for 9 weeks.
