    Anyone have any?

I ask because I have one young blackbird ( a right insistent youngling when it comes to being fed :)) in the garden that is being fed by two adults, and I also have my regular pair of blackbirds working overtime filling their beaks with mealworm as they fly back and forth to their nest.

There was a female blackbird in my garden collecting bits, for a nest.

Just a few mins ago I saw a small brownish bird with a red patch on it's head. I'm guessing it's a young goldfinch, since my garden has 20+ goldfinches today. :)

Are the birds building nests now?

It was probably a Redpoll you saw. Juvenile Goldfinch don't have any red on their face/head.

Female robin is now sitting on her nest with the male fetching mealworm for her.

A number of house sparrows are either sitting on eggs and/or feeding young going by the amount of male and female birds gathering mealworm rather than eating them.

Lots of other birds gathering what they need for nest building.

There has been a pair of buzzards in my area for the last couple of years, and I was delighted to see this week that they have become three ...

The youngster has already had to learn to run the gauntlet of the neighbourhood rooks, and by the sound of him he wasn't enjoying it either ....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,780 ✭✭✭Bsal

Sparrows have all of a sudden gone into a frenzy of collecting food for their young today, my Blackbirds are still building a nest and the Sparrowhawk has become very active this week.

I think that fledgling could be a smaller male competing for the larger hen bird - young buzzard usually don't start leaving the nest until July at the earliest.

Had a fledgling Woodpigeon in the garden this morning.

Must admit I was expecting to be corrected (and I wasn't disappointed), as it did kinda seem pretty implausible from its size that this bird - while smaller - could have been just recently born ...

Either way, it's lovely to see them up there :)

Do buzzards always nest in a wood? Cos there are only a few small woods around me, and it is a Bank Holiday weekend .... would love to see one up close.

I had my first fledgling Sparrow in the garden today, I expect the Starlings will be fledging very soon in my area too.

Same here. Can hear them during the day whenever the parent birds return with food.

My robins have upped their workrate as well with both birds working overtime to fetch mealworm and bring it to the nestbox. Mommy bird has been carrying out the fecal sacs and dumping them.

Unfortunately I've a nest of starlings in the gutter
I say unfortunately because when It rains heavily the gutter tends to flood a bit
And rain hasn't been too bad lately but only thinking its a matter of time before it does and maybe they'll fly off before its too late

I had a fledgling Siskin in the garden a few minutes ago :D. This is a first for me, only started getting Siskins in the garden last winter.

Found a robin's nest in my workshop this week, 4 or 5 fledglings in it, both parents bringing food to them every couple of minutes throughout the day. I never thought robins would build indoors, usually spend most years fearing swallows building nests inside.

Fledgling blackbird now bigger than it's worn out dad in my back garden. Haven't seen mum for a few weeks for some reason...I guess incubating eggs for round 2 is a possibility...

Have baby wrens in the next box again this year. :D:D:D

Mommy wren has been coming down to the windowsill to me to grab her share of mealworm and mini mealworm along with the usual clatter of great tits, blue tits, robins, coal tits, and blackbirds.

She figured out last summer what the other birds were coming to me for and has been in on the act since then. :) She spent much of today taking away two, three and even four mealworm with her, then darting in to where her nestbox is, and back out again.

He has yet another crop of mini Ollys floating about. Both he and the same Mrs Olly are still going strong and both arrive a good number of times each day looking for their mealworm.

Plus he still has his trick of knocking on the window when my back is to it.:D

Came across a Crossbill family including 3 juveniles in a larger Conifer plantation near Bellacorick North Mayo today. I'm open to correction here but AFAIK they have never been recorded breeding in the county. I will try to confirm this in the coming days.

Spotted a few little Pied Wags today, and some Long-tailed Tit adults feeding some not-so-long-tailed young in the bushes.

In the last week in our garden we have had 2 Blackbirds, 1 Jackdaw, 2 Robins, 1 Dunnock, 1 Great Tit and many House Sparrows all recently fledged.

We are having the quietest year EVER in terms of fledglings in my big garden
I have to say with no hyperbole they are down by 90%
both in quantities of seen and type of species

For example there is some wasteland near my house with an abandoned ruins/house and every single year bluetits nest in holes in the gable end This year ZERO.
Also no fledgling Blackbirds spotted. The blackbirds are around and have built nests
in the garden but never bred. Normally i would except the garden to be full with baby blackbirds .

Just had our first Goldfinch fledgling of the year in the garden. 5 five day old Robins in the camera nestbox doing well.

I know it's a bit late for fledglings, but I had to share these photo's. I've been entertained for the past couple of days by one of my regular visitors, a chaffinch, and his brood.

He's been a very good parent, visiting regularly for a special treat of suet pellets (only him and the robin have been getting those). He's got so used to me giving them to him that he does a "fly by" of the kitchen window, even attempting a hover so that I don't miss him - cheeky sod :D

I also saw a young robin yesterday and there have been lots of juvenile jackdaws and rooks as well.

Just love my birdies - who needs a TV when you have this in your back garden :)

It's far from late for fledglings. Most common birds will have clutches until September.

5 Robin chicks left the nest box yesterday. Parents carrying food into a nearby hedge.

Swallow's nest in my workshop appeared during the week, strangely enough a lone Swallow which has been around all summer has built it. Presumably he is expecting company at some stage.

3 juvenile Goldfinches in the garden yesterday. 1 newly fledged Blue Tit and 1 Great Tit this morning. Quite a few juvenile Jackdaws and Magpies around the area.

2 fledgling blackbirds feeding out the back of the house for a last few days - one has no tail, are there any stats on how common this is, it looks very dinosaur-ish!

The neighbourhood Buzzards fledged 3 young this week. They were running late but at last it's great to see them circling the garden and hear their calls.

    Srameen.

Six fledgling wrens tumbling around in the Virginia Creeper this afternoon :)

At about 10.30AM this morning I heard some incredibly loud birdsong coming from some scrubland beside the house.
It turned out to be a gathering of newly fledged sparrows and a few finches. I counted 53 though there were probably more hidden in the foliage. They sang for about 30mins and dispersed when some magpies appeared

Here's a short video - apologies for the quality but you get a general idea of the din though the birds are indiscernable
