Small headed driver

    Hi all,

Does anyone know of a small headed driver that has been released by a reputable maker in the last few years? I have a bit of a mental block when hitting the big bulky headed drivers that all companies seem to be making these days. I have tried the lessons route and am hitting all clubs a lot better lately but have had to leave the driver in the car as it feels and looks totally wrong to me right from the get-go. Perhaps I should be on the psychology forum rather than the golf forum:o

Tee it up and start hitting pitch/chip type shots with it.
When I switched I had a similar issue, it just looked like the head would break off, sure it was weak to be that light?!

Spent some time just making contact with it, getting used to the sound and feel of a ball off the middle of the face and soon enough it was second nature and I didnt think about it at all.

You will be at a serious disadvantage if you go back to using a small headed club, stick with it.

Just going with a 3 wood is a good option too. I've been meaning to leave my driver out of my bag for a full round for a while now but the temptation to leave it in 'just in case' is too much, as is the temptation to then nearly always hit it.

I've read many times that amateurs are better off hitting their 3 wood as they'll be more consistent and need the extra loft due to their swing speed.

Even though I generally hit my driver quite well, I'm fairly sure my 3 wood distance is not far off on all but the very best (and rare) hits with my driver. My problem is, I feel too comfortable with the driver and the temptation is to nearly always use it, sometimes to my detriment.

So, one option you have is to use your discomfort with the big heads to your advantage and concentrate on your 3 wood.

I was hitting the new Nike covert drivers last week in the range. The mortals version was class.
The tour version is a smaller head and when sitting behind the ball at set up its like a 3 wood.

To be honest I wouldn't be going down that route. You really had to hit it 100% out of the middle or it was a duff.

Agree that you will be at a disadvantage to go back to a real old style club.

Some companies do have models that are slightly smaller however.

    Titleist's 910D3 is smaller than 460cc, I think its 420 or 440 (not sure about the 913D3)

Taylor Made's original R11 is also smaller, again its 420 or 440cc, actually its arguably the best looking of their recent drivers IMO.
Their current R1 also comes in a smaller size but that may be a special order at best, it may be a tour only release.

Buddy of mine has a driving iron,no driver.
Getting 230 yards with run out on it. More importantly a bad miss is still straight.

There should be some early "bubble" drivers around in good nick, you can see from many posts here that lads gave up the game for years and are returning now so even though the club is old I'm sure they are in good nick, keep an eye on adverts, I've seen them from time to time.
