Delusional Mature Students Bleeding Us Dry

    This is something that has done my head in now for the past decade. We all know the guy in college that started in science, repeated first year, crossed over to arts, repeated 3rd year. Worked in a shop for a year. Started a masters but left after a few months. Was on the dole for two years and is now back as a mature student trying to do something completely different. They will dabble in art, bands, djing and mainly partying and maintaining their weed habit.

    Taking up courses that are really just hobbies (photography and sound engineering) and that will never lead to a job. Why do we tolerate this?

    Take this person for example.

    <snip>

    Most of us paying these taxes are just existing and its money completely wasted on these people.
    The welfare budget is €20 billion now, 2/3rds of our actual tax income.

    Well I think it's a bit unfair picking on a guy asking fr advice in another forum but I would like to deal with your points.

    Mature students are far and away over represented as a group in the high achievers in college. They are better than I was as an undergraduate and most other undergraduates. In science this year the presidents award is being awarded to a large number of mature students.

    I demonstrate to science students an mature students are most likely back in college because they want to be. Not because science is where all the other over privileged kids are going.

    Although i agree to a certain extent,there are people out there who are in there late 20's and 30's (and even beyond) on the dole queue doing nothing,however they can now avail of services to better themselves and also to pay back what they have taken through higher paying jobs (more tax).The majority of mature students i have come across have achieved higher grades than school leavers and have also applied themselves far more.I don't think it's fair to tar every mature student as being a scrounger by comparing them with someone who is in college for "the craic".

    Can't blame the OP.
    Absolute scumbag of a poster that he linked to.
    Look at this one:
    <snip>

    Pure scum trying to get a chance at work, absolutely terrible.

    I feel like applauding them because I'm so enraged by their efforts to get a course that'll help them get work.
