Garmin S1 fits nicely into all the above.Absolutely love mine, nothing fancy just yardages to front, middle and back of the green. It does exactly what it says on the tin..Check around online for a decent deal.

Tks Checked the S1 £129 vs S3 £205 just wondering what the S3 has that the S1 does not, but if S1 does everything needed then will get that, also can I use this in competition

Yes, you can use in competition (unless a local rule exists, but only ever seen that happen once)

S1 is all you need. My sky caddie gives far more info, but s1 is much quicker and less fuss

I think the S2 approach watch and the like give you distances to hazards etc. Basically more information. The S1 just gives you distance to front, middle and back of the green without consideration of specific hazards. If you check the 'American Golf' homepage there is a nice photo of the S2 which explains what I am saying. Personally I have the S1 which is excellent and bought it in 'American Golf' at Christmas for €159.00, money well spent.....

Just to be clear it's the other way around, a local rule must be in place to allow dmds, so you should always enquire before you play, but I've yet to come across a club that doesn't allow them.

    I have the S3 watch

The main differences from what i can remember are:

Its a touchscreen (works even with a glove on)
It has a higher resolution screen (less pixelated)
Has Green view (you can press to get an ariel view of the green and then move the flag to where it is on the green and get the distance to that point)
Has lay-up yardages to 200, 150, 100 and distance to doglegs
You can save custom locations eg bunkers
It has a digital scorecard (strokeplay and stableford)
It can hold more courses (although the S1 can hold 18,000 so...)

Heres a good quick demo video of them side by side where you can see the differences http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0lcN5rYcqxg

I got the S3 after seeing that video but in truth 99% of the time i just use the front middle and back yardages so would be equally happy with the S1. The touch screen and higher resolution are nice, lay-up distances can be handy but nothing you cant do with a bit of mental math yourself. I thought id use the green view more but i dont bother.

All in all its a great bit of kit. Id definitely recommend getting one. Much handier to use in watch format than a stand-alone GPS unit.

Any opinions on the Bushnell one? I have a voucher for a shop that just stocks that one and will probably pick it up.

Just a quick question for the S1 or S3- what's the battery life like ? Does it require charging ?

I have the busnell neo+ and I got two rounds out of it at very easily at the weekend. I have it charging at my work computer at the moment, I takes about an hour of charging and the battery will be back at 100%.

I think the battery life of the Garmin ones is 8 hours with GPS on and about 6 weeks or something without GPS. I always have over 50% left after a round but i charge it at night anyway if i am playing the next day. It charges pretty quick. Like id say an hour or two ? (I could be wrong. I have never timed it but usually when i throw it on charge its done by the time i come back to it. I never have to leave it over night.)

The other good thing is free updates, no subscriptions, and it works all over the world. Has courses from the USA to Australia and the charger comes with adapters for the different plug sockets in each area.

It's absolutely easy and quick to charge.Full charge will probably do 2 rounds but you'll find yourself charging it after most rounds just in case.Don't wear a watch normally and wearing this does not bother me at all. It'll become your best friend after a while, especially when you find out the distances you hit each club.Great addition to the golf gear.Especially handy on courses you've not played before and can be set to either yards or metres.
