Been planing this for a while now and now that i have a job its time to build this. This build will be watercooled in the near future.

I'm not waiting for haswell as it looks like it will be july before it releases

and since this is a prodigy build the GPU needs to be a single PCIe card so 690/titan

    1. What is your budget? [£2000/€2300]

    2. What will be the main purpose of the computer? [Gaming/Streaming/Video Editing(small amounts)/CAD/Internet]

    3. Do you need a copy of Windows? [No]

    4. Can you use any parts from an old computer? no

    5. Do you need a monitor? [Yes]

5a. If yes, what size do you need. [19'/20'/22'/24'/etc.] 23/24" inch 120hz to compliment my catleap

5b. If no, what resolution is your current monitor and do you plan to upgrade in the near future?

    6. Do you need any of these peripherals? [Keyboard/Mouse/Wireless Card/Speakers] open to suggestions

    7. Are you willing to try overclocking? [Yes]

    8. How can you pay? [Bank Transfer/Credit Card]

    9. When are you purchasing? [6 weeks]

    10. If you need help building it, where are you based? [no help needed, but based in the UK so can avail of cheaper delivery from whoever]

Well, I don't hate your guts quite as much since the M1 has become my front-runner for my next build, but I'm still muchos jealous. :P

    Anyway:

Comes to €1,834 for components, and €626 for water cooling, totalling €2,460. That's before a monitor. :)

That's top-of-the-line everything though, cutbacks could be made in a couple of places, but from all the research I did, the above is pretty much the perfect Prodigy build. I adapted it a bit for you, in that I splashed out on Bitspower fittings and white tubing (I would have gone for cheap and clear, and spent the money on sound proofing material).

Hope that helps as a start at least.

how does a fanless psu fair in the prodigy?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,181 ✭✭✭Serephucus

It's a tricky one to pin down evidence for I'll admit, but I've seen a couple of posts of people using them without problems. There's also the fact that there would be an air penetrator in the front, so it should push a decent amount of air to the back.

i was going to buy that psu for my prodigy build but on reading up a bit about it i decided it might cause problems with the heat rising up right under the motherboard. perhaps i was probably being a bit ocd about it but it may still be something to consider.

Looks sweet. No idea how all of that is gonna fit into that tiny case but please throw up a build log with lots of pics :)

thanks the watercooling doesnt need to be included on this budget as i want to see how much room ill have in the case and planning.

    Couple of questions though
will the seasonic be enough to power the titan consider i will be GPU boost?
    and
690 or titan? ive been torn between the 2 but im leaning towards the lower temps of the titan considering the limited rad space

what monitor would you recommend given that im looking for a 120hz monitor?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,299 ✭✭✭✭BloodBath

Why 120hz? Do you play competitive fps games? I'd sooner go with a nice 27" or 30" 1440p monitor.

Well to be honest, there's not a whole lot more you could put in the case, you're literally limited by space in this case. If the water cooling isn't included, I'd get whatever size SSD you want as a boot drive, then grab a 960GB M500 when they come out (around €550).

PSU will probably be close when you factor in overclocking, but it should be fine. If you're worried, grab a 600W Platimax. They're basically fanless.

As far as monitors, I haven't a clue, I'm not really interested in 120Hz stuff. I'd have a look and see if there are any IPS monitors out there, definitely wouldn't be going TN with this budget.

There aren't many 120Hz IPS monitors AFAIK. The only option that I know of are the overclockable Catleaps.

have a good catleap already and i would like 120hz to try it out and possibly have a go of nvidia 3d. It will be my secondary monitor but it will be used for lans and times when the catleap is too difficult to transport

In general a 690 gives higher max FPS than the Titan, sometimes by up to 20% depending on the benchmark or game. Having said that, the Titan is more consistant and smoother in its delivery.
The Titan only comes into its own when gaming at or above 1440p/60Hz or in multimonitor setups. Anything below that, other far cheaper cards will match the performance.
I spent considerable time weighing up the pros and cons of both the 690 and Titan before going for the Titan in my setup and even then I needed 2 of them to be comfortable with the resolutions I'm running at. (7680x1600)

The 690 is a slighly longer card so that's something to consider if the case is small.

I'd be inclinded to go for the Titan but really it depends on what monitor you're going for.

You can also add another titan to go SLI while a 690 wouud be in quad SLI which scales like crap. Titan is a better option. Watch out for the titan LE coming soon.

Not with an ITX board you can't. My vote would be for Titan as well though. It is a bit behind 690, but IMO it's got a better feature set, and has the advantage of being single GPU.

Watch out for the titan LE coming soon.

It will be interesting to see where they price that one. It's confusing enough for many consumers that the 690 and Titan are priced more or less the same. The LE card is rumoured to have it's VRAM cut down to 5GB and over a 320bit memory bus as opposed to 384bit. It has already been confirmed that a new GK110 GPU is arriving sometime in Q3 2013.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,181 ✭✭✭Serephucus

It's simply going to be the GeForce equivalent of the K20. The Titan was the K20X. So, 13 SMXs enabled, 320-bit bus, 5GB of VRAM at 208GB/s, and 2496 CUDA cores.

Get the strong impressions Nvidia are holding back some major performance with the next line up of cards. Waiting for ATI's next move.

    Guess im going titan then:D

how the hell do you game on that ive had a look at 3 catleaps together and it was very overwhelming. its an awful lot of screen to keep track of.

@Serephucus for the watercooling did you see any mention of having to mod the casein your research? just curious

None. Everything I've specced should* work perfectly. I spent quite a lot of time looking over different parts and combinations. If you go for a 200mm rad rather than a 180 for example, it'll fit, and clear everything... until you try and put the side panel on, and the I/O PCB gets in the way. :P Should be plenty of room though. The only thing I'm not certain on is if you'll still have room for a rear 120mm fan, but I threw one in the build anyways.

*I don't have the case, so don't shoot me.

    Thanks
small amounts of modding are no problem but i was just wondering if i had to steal a dremmel from work :D

Absolute worse case, which I think is basically an impossibility, you'd need a drill.
