Hi, I'll be in the big city tomorrow and I was wondering if anyone could point me towards a well stocked off licence for beers? I'm just hoping to pick up something different while I'm there.

    Thanks in advance

What part of Dublin will you be in?

Probus on Fenian Street is fairly good, but don't go in at Lunch time.

Redmond's in Ranelagh and Carvill's in Camden Street.

    Two of the best.

So, the consesnus is that there aren't really any decent off licences in the Grafton St, Dame St, O'Connell Bridge, O'Connell Street, Halfpenny Bridge, Temple Bar, Jervis St, Henry St areas. Kind of the central part of town really. Certainly the two main shopping areas.

Apart from one on Camden Street, which isn't exactly "central"

    That's pretty bad

Celtic Whiskey on Dawson Street has a semi-decent selection. You can also get beer to take away at the Bull & Castle.

Carvills on Camden St has been closed for a few days? Anyone know why?

SuperValu on Aston Quay is definitely worth a look if you don't have time to head out to the Drinkstore in Stoneybatter.

    +1 for Probus.

Then nip over to The Gingerman for a pint or 4 of Writers (Rebel) Red.

A notice up on the shutters says they had some emergency renovations to carry out. I hope they will be open as soon as possible; it's arguably the oldest off licence in the city and one retailer which is mentioned in the most iconic of Dublin books, Ulysses :)

It's mentioned under its previous owner's name, and I think I read that the shop was on the other side of the street then too. I'd need to check my 1904 Thom's Directory :)
