I realise that this swim might be far too short for many of you but I wanted to let you know about it anyway. A group of triathletes got together last year and organised a run where we tried to bring good organisation to bear as well as a great price. Have a look at the link below to see what people thought of our efforts.

This year we are bringing back the Shannon Mile Swim. It will be staged right in the centre of Athlone two weeks before triAthlone beginning at 6pm. We are limiting the places to 300 which would be 6 waves of 50 people. Registration opened two weeks ago and the response has been very good so we are expecting a really good atmosphere and some great swimmers.
Wetsuit is not compulsory and if the numbers are there we will have a non wetsuit wave.

Just signed up for this, exactly the sort of event I'm looking for. Thanks for the heads up!

Good man Mick, we will have updates on the Facebook page and on the website. We have HUUB wetsuits on board also. We hope to be able to organize a couple of lanes in Athlone Regional Sports centre on the day of the swim for people who might wish to have a warm up before the swim.

Will HUUB rent any wetsuits for the day?

HUUB are planning on being at the event and would rent some wetsuits. If they cannot make it we will have a backup plan to make a wetsuit available to hire.

Registrations are going well. We have a mix of swimming clubs, triathlon clubs and open water swimmers entered so far.

    Points to note.

Its over 90% downsteam so the distance is achievable and it will be a fast swim.

You would only be ina wave of maximum 50 people.

    You will be chipped timed.

We will have age category prizes

You have the option of not using a wetsuit.

It is an insured swim with a co-ordinated safety plan which will have sub aqua support, boat support, kayak support as well as on land support.

You will register in Athlone castle and finish just beside the Castle in Athlone's Left Bank Area

This part of the river is available twice a year for a swim, our swim and triAthlone which happens two weeks later.

Go on mossym Carpe Diem . Bring a friend and relive the adventure after in Seans Bar

It took me some investigating, to find out what is the length of the swim
Tempted, will most likely try to make up my mind this weekend.

    Hi ThOnda,

Swim is 1600m(1 mile). However, as we have pointed out it is majority downstream which will make it very fast.

Would like to do this but there's a complete clash with a running race unfortunately. Not often you'll get two races you want to do on a Saturday evening :)

@Racoon Queen, thats unfortunate. Why not come to our swim instead. Don't forget we organize the best value half marathon in the country also. flatline Athlone half Marathon also €20

Registrations are going well and have a good spread across the country and from the triathlon and swimming clubs. We don't seem s to have the open water or masters swimmers on board yet so if anyone could give us advice on how to crack that it would be appreciated.

The left bank traders are working with us and we are hoping to have the area blocked off and provide entertainment such as DJ and band.

We are being asked to put on a 750m swim and this is something we are going to look at and decide on shortly. Its appears to be logistically possible.

    HUUB are onboard for Wetsuits

Signed myself up yesterday, looks like a great event, and decent value too! I only fell across the notice because I was lookin for info on the Escape from Ireland Swim - I would've been p155ed if I missed it!

Welcome aboard Killser. We are glad you spotted it. We would welcome advice as to where we should advertise the event so that we connect with the swimming community.

We have now added a 750m swim to the event as we have been asked by people to provide this.

I'd say get the email of all the tri-club secretaries and tell them its a wetsuit swim :D, ask them to post on their Facebook and/or Website and/or Messageboard

Hi, any update on the rental situation? If it's a fast swim then it just might be bearable without a wetsuit.
