    Hi,

I'm a newbie to bike mechanics so sorry if this is a daft question but I am wondering is it possible to put a 10 speed cassette on a 9 speed hub. I was told I could in a shop but I just wanted to check here first before I decide to buy anything. I understand that 10 speed cassettes are narrower to fit in the 10 sprockets, would this allow it to fit on a 9 speed hub. Are all newer hubs the same size? or were they made slightly larger to fit the 10 speed cassette.

    Cheers

I think you can, but won't you have to change the shifters from 9 speed to 10 speed also? Those parts are quite expensive in my experience.

    Cheers,

I already have them as the bike was originally a 10 speed TT set up that was converted to a nine speed racer set up, which has been wrecked by some nacker after he stole it. While I have been lucky enough to get my bike back I need to go back to the 10 speed components but I also need a new rear wheel and the ones with 9 speed hubs seem slightly cheaper.

    You'll need a 10 speed chain also.

Ya I still have that with all my other 10 speed components.

Thanks for your help guys :)

Yes, it will work, but you may need a small spacer for the 10 speed cassette. If you are buying one new, the spacer, if required, will come with it.

In general Shimano 8,9 & 10 speed cassettes will fit the same hub.
