car insurance question

I crashed my car last year and lost my no claims bonus.
Now, trying to get insurance on a cheap run around car (worth €2000)
is costing my nearly a grand for third party!

Is there anything to stop me puting my wife in as policy holder and me going in as named driver? Works out around €270 that way.

She has her own car and insurance on it.
Would she have to be the named owner of my car to do that?

She can only use her NCB on her own policy OP. Plus if you get found out it could be awkward. :)

No, you don't have to be the registered owner of a vehicle in order to hold the policy on said vehicle in a spousal situation.

Her NCB can only be used once for one policy.
Your best bet would be contact a broker for advice. It is possible to have two cars insured under two policies by the same person, but this is on the assumption that the policyholder is the main driver of the vehicle.

Your wife would start at zero no claims bonus as it's a 2nd policy. I have doubts that you would be €270 extra given your claim history.

my mother sold her car last year and had a 10 year + NCB.
I assume I could get her insured and be a named driver on it?
Is there any way the insurance company would know that she doesn't actually drive the car?

It should be mentioned that some insurers will allow you to mirror your existing NCB onto a second policy, so those saying she can only use her NCB on one policy are not strictly correct!
