    Hi,

Been a Sky customer for the past 8 years or so.
Have an old Sky+ box and have been contacting them to see if i can upgrade to a HD box. They won't let me do it without taking out the HD Pack subscription for an extra €15 per month.

However, if i join as a new customer - i get the free box etc.

Just wondering if I cancel my current subscription - then my wife registers as a new customer - but at the same address and using the same account number for direct debit - would that work?? Anyone else do something similar?

    Thanks.

Not sure if that will work for you but I do know of some people who got a free HD box by calling Sky and saying they will cancel.

Why not purchase a new box on ebay or adverts.ie?

The only thing you would need to do would be to contact sky to change the card pairing.

The nuclear option is to request a new box for free and if they still refuse ask to cancel.

When you get through to cancelations they will ask whats the issue and will normally offer you a deal to retain you. At the worst they will offer you nothing and setup your cancellation but you have to give 30 days notice in which you can change your mind.

But with that said I have been receiving discounts of my subs for over 2 years because they are desperate to retain customers .

Give them a call and see how you get on, you have nothing to loose.

I recently got a SkyHD box from them for 5euro. I said that box had been falling and I constantly had to do full resets (losing my recorded programs) and that the disk was very noisy. All of which were true.

They wanted me to pay 100euro so I asked for the cancellation dept (hoping they wouldnt call my bluff). They said they would call me back. A few hours later I got a call saying they needed just 5euro for a box and engineer to drop out and install.

Shouldnt be a problem. I used to have sky when I lived at home in my parents, bit it was in my brothers name, because I was too young to sign up for sky at the time. When my HD box packed it in, I cancelled the sub under my brothers name, and rejoined under my own.

Myself and hubby done this a few years ago, had it in his name, cancelled and got it in my name. But i did hear recently that sky copped on to this and now there is a grace period to reconnect to sky in the same address(a few months)....not sure if its true, but you may check it out. Someone on here might know!

    Thanks all for the responses.

I checked around on other forums etc - and it seems it can be done.
I went onto the Sky website - New to sky section - then get started.

Put in all the details and ended up at the screen where i could choose my installation date.
Mad thing is - i get a free box/dish etc - and the same package as i'm on right now (paying €35 per month) for €22.50 per month for 12 months.
So that's a saving of €150 in the year.

Come on - it would be wrong not to do it right? Only thing is i'll have to change my userID for logging in and Sky+ app on phone etc...

Will give them a call this evening to cancel and see if i'm offered anything.

Don't cancel until you get a new card in the post. Sky now manually check all orders against existing or previous accounts (up to 12 months) They will cross reference the address, any phone number you supplied and the bank details submitted. If the details match an account the order is cancelled. It was easy to cancel and re sign up to a year ago, much more difficult now.

Phoned Sky last night to cancel.
As some of you predicted - they made me an offer.
New Sky HD box on the way along with HD Pack for 12 months - and all for less than i'm currently paying per month - so well worth the call.

Would still have been better off (albeit without the HD Pack) had i got my wife to sign up as a new customer, but the hassle involved with new viewing cards, sky apps etc - not to mind the possibility that they may have cancelled the order having twigged the address, phone number or bank a/c number made my mind up for me.

    Thanks all for your inputs.
