Sorry, can't help you with schools in Portlaoise but we have moved last Summer and I too have a very sensitive kid aged 8. I would strongly suggest you find out about schools soon and make a decision pretty fast as it will take time for them to work out their numbers, process your application and let you know.

Before we moved, I rang the teacher before the Summer term ended and had a chat with her about the class and about our child settling in come September. I must say, she was brilliant, so helpful.. and has turned out to be a great teacher this year which really makes all the difference to help your child settle in. It might also be useful to find out what Summer camps are on and if any of the kids from the class go to them, that way your kid(s) can get an introduction to the kids in the area, and with any luck, make some friends before starting school.

I don't know that many schools in portlaoise well but I live in Abbeyleix which is 10 - 15 mins from portlaoise and would highly recommend Scoil Mhuire in Abbeyleix. I have worked a lot in a few primary schools in Laois and it's probably the one I would rate the highest. TBH they all have various strengths and I think it is luck of the draw with regard to the children your child will be sharing a class with as to how much they like their school days.

Having said that, Scoil Mhuire is probably the most progressive school that I have worked in. They are very interested in the whole development of children and take full advantage of every community, arts, sports and practical learning opportunity available. If I had known how committed the staff there were to both academics and other projects I would have sent my own children there. Not that there is anything wrong with the school they went to, it was great, but I have really been so impressed with the staff at Scoil Mhuire!

I'd choose Abbeyleix over Portlaoise as a place to live, given a choice. Can't comment as to schools though.

Different strokes for different folks, I know but I would definitely pick Abbeyleix. I moved here almost 7 years ago now and don't have words for how much I love the town and the people in it. It was voted second best small town in the world last year. The best advice I can give is to spend a few days in each of the places that you are considering before you make up your mind. PM me if you do decide to go for Abbeyleix and I will give you the guided tour!
