Sizing for canyon bike

I'm looking at getting my first roadbike, and been trying out a few over the last week or so. So far the Giant Defy 2 L(55.5) seems the best fit, but not the best spec for the €1000 budget. I am now looking at getting the Kellys ARC 3.0 L (55) or the Canyon Roadlite AL 6.0, what size Canyon would be closest in size to the Defy? From what I can see looking at the geometry charts it seems to be the XL (60) canyon, but that could hardly be right considering I am just 6ft? The canyon calculator says to get the L (58) frame but I have seen on other threads that it is not very accurate at times?

    Hi there,

Its a difficult thing to advise without knowing more about your measurements and your level of fitness / flexibility.

I can say that im just over 6ft1 and im on a 60cm Canyon but i reckon I could have gone for the 58cm, however I would be looking for an agressive position which may not suit some people looking for a more comfortable fit.

If you wanted I could meet up with you for a spin and you could try my 60cm for size.

Just based on your height id say that a M/L Giant or 58cm Canyon may be the way to go but that does not take into account the other factors mentioned above.

based upon my own experience with rose, i would advise using one of the fit calculators online. its a pain with all that measuring, but better than waiting for a replacement because you plumped for the wrong size.

im 6'3" and rose advised me towards a 61cm. which was the same as my old specialized allez. the xeon is a very different geometry, with a horizontal tt and generally huge in comparison. i get the feeling that german bikes are like that.

i would def go a size down with it if i was you. im actually getting a 57cm, which just seems wrong, but ive looked at the figures and it adds up.

either way, take a bit of research before you pull the trigger

Canyon do the sizing for you if you give them your measurements

    Ps I order a large and I'm 6ft

I'm 6'1. told rose i wanted a more agressive fit and they put me on a 57, would seem at our height an aggressive fit would have been the 59. they told me a 59 if i wanted a more relaxed touring ride

If you use the online calculator then email the guys in Canyon UK for a second opinion they'll be able to advise you. Seemingly the online size calculator has a slight bias towards inseam length.

I'm 6'2 (long legged, shortish torso) and I ride a Canyon AL XL 60cm

6ft here and on a 58cm Canyon (CF slx 2012, think this year's geometry may have changed slightly?) , the online calculator pointed me towards a 56cm, I used the geometry on their site to compare the 56 and 58 with previous bikes I had and decided in the end to go with the 58. Perfect fit, but could probably have just as easily been fitted the same on the 56 by messing around with stem length etc. That, however, will be a problem, bear in mind the Canyon steerer tube is an odd size so sourcing a stem can be a pain, you're basically limited to buying direct from Canyon, and delivery can take a while.
Good advice above re mailing Cullen Ward, I've dealt with him on a number of occasions and always found him extremely helpful.

Thanks everyone for the replies, some more homework to do before the purchase I think!

Is it just parts take a while, or Is the bike delivery time slow? From what I had read online I thought the deliveries from canyon were quick enough once the bikes were in stock?

I ordered March 28. And it will be dispatched today so hopefully will have it by the end of the week

I'm a half inch above 6 ft and I went for the 58. It has a 110mm stem which I do think could be a bit shorter but that aside it's fine.

If you're ever in the Glasnevin end of Finglas you can try it for size before making a purchase. It's a Roadlite 7 so it'll be the same frame as yours.

Once its in stock ( I think its the express area of the online store ) its quick enough - just make sure to mention any change in stem length when you're placing the order. You can track it through the postal system while you wait for delivery.

Delivery times with any bike or frame I've got was quick, roughly a week. With the likes of a stem I'd be used to getting spare parts in a day or two from Wiggle or CRC, so I'm just being impatient when I say it can take a while from Canyon.

Like Mr Skeffington above I went for the XL (60cm) but because of it's more upright riding position I've had to lower the stem (110mm) to it's max to feel a bit racier. I'm just under 6'2''. I used their online calculator to help me decide the size to buy.

Looking like its a L(58) for me. I went to check the delivery times, I will have to wait until week 26 for a compact but the triple is in stock! Just when I thought I had my decision made, another spanner in the works! Thinking I might just go with the triple anyway, even if its 50 euro extra for something I dont want! :) No other bike seems to come close on spec for price.

I bought my and then the next day the build week went to week 26 and was about the scrap my order but I might have got the last bike available as order processed very quickly. Lucky me!

i thought the same a couple of months ago, and was going to buy a canyon, then i found the rose bikes. even canyon don't come close to them on price. worth a look before you pull the trigger. happy out with my bike .

at the €1000 price point I think they were pretty much the same

I'm 6ft and last year I went with an Ultimate CF size 56, which has an effective top tube length of 554mm. Reason being is that I compared it to my last bike which was a bit too small. It's a PX which effective top tube length of 547mm and my knees would be smacking my elbows when I was in the in the drops. No such problems with the 56 Canyon, even with a 100mm stem so happy out.

i hear that. the 61 was basically unrideable. it was very stretched out for sure esp with the 120 stem, but the standover height was insane, and not helped by the horizontal tt as i mentioned. i see that canyon geometry seems more compact though.

how do you find the 57? wish it was a 59 or what?

not even for a minute, delighted with it. did a 145k spin around kerry on saturday, 6 hours pedalling, 8 hours total time out, so that was a real test for comfort. had no issues on it. i have a felt z95 which is much more of a relaxed ride as well, that's a 58, the rose is a much more aggressive ride but i find it spot on.

i do want to get a bike fit done on it though, which i'm convinced the frame is the right size, i do think some minor tweaks to position would help a little

cool. now just gotta wait for the box to arrive again. worked out best probably since i had gotten the carbon one (2012 model), and tbh, i think i'd have been too paranoid about the frame to really enjoy

mine is the carbon, i try to mind it, but not excessively. good luck with the new ride. i was sceptical about the 57 at first when they told me, but when i got it i realised I'm not even close to the limit for being too big for the bike. should be no bother for a couple of inches taller

Lucky you...when I ordered the estimated delivery date was mid May...by the time I had placed the order and received the estimated delivery date it had slipped to mid June.

Thinking of cancelling and ordering the Defy 1 or else paying €300 extra for Roadlite 7.0
