Problem with vibrating/shaking car

    Hi guys,

I have a problem with a 04 civic. I'm getting a lot of shaking/vibrating through the car and steering wheel when it goes over 80kph. Also when changing gear there is the car stutters when the clutch is released.

I jacked it up for inspection and have found that the front right wheel will turn a couple of times and then lock. It will not turn any more until its turned back a little bit, then it will turn another couple of times.

The car is just out of 3 month warranty so I'm fearing the worst.

    Any ideas?

What about the issue with the front wheel?

The front wheel will rotate then stop when jacked up, it's normal. Now if it's spinning away you have an issue.

I'd get your wheels balanced and go from there, you may need a new clutch too

The vibration through the steering wheel is most likely the wheel balancing is off. I'd get that checked first and it's not expensive.

Either Inner CV joint or wheel balance, even bad shock can cause shaking like this.

My bet though is wheels seriously out of balance.

Check that the boot of all CV joints are not torn, if one of the outer ones are torn then you would most likely hear loud clicking on left or right lock of the steering and if the inner ones are gone it could cause the shaking you describe.

The shaking at high speed sounds like balancing/alignment is off. Shouldn't be more than 50 to fix depending on where you go.

I've a similar problem maybe not as pronounced as yours op but still noticeable @ 55 mph. I've balanced the wheels and it's still kinda there. The steering wheel is rock solid but there's still vibration coming through the car. Cv boots /joints are all in good shape.

Does anybody know would tracking make an difference?I find it incredibly annoying :-(

Even if the boots are in good shape it still can be the inner CV joint.

I doubt tracking would matter, the thing you would notice with tracking would be inner or outer tyre ware or steering pulling to left or right.

It wouldn't be unusual getting the wheels "balanced" only to drive it at speed on the motorway to find the wheels not balanced right, where they would just say "ah it's balanced enough he won't notice it."

At speed many things will show up you don't notice otherwise, I had a similar issue and rotated front tyres to rear and it stopped.

Could also be buckled alloy. Again easily repaired. I had one and it cause vibration at about 100k. Spin them around and u will notice any buckle.

Its like anything I suppose if im looking for something wrong I'll find it. Im sure a bit of vibration must be common enough in most cars at high speed with everything moving so fast. Maybe Im expecting too much but at least I know everything is ok with it when checked out.

Might be no harm to rotate the wheels anyway as you say.

Both wishbone bushings replaced and wheels balanced; 220+vat

    Excellent!

I would imagine bushings to cause knocking or creaking over bumps etc ?

Yes you're right. There was a bit of a knocking sound when going over speed bumps.
