Not sure who the OP is about but Niall Boylan is another account who has amassed a very big following in South America. Fair play to him

Is there a correlation between a person's twitter follower numbers and the quality of their radio show now? Wow... ;)

Its a pretty desperate measure if any radio station or presenter has to buy twitter followers or facebook likes. It doesnt say a lot for the quality of the radio show if they are not capable of increasing their numbers on their own merits. Then again, I suppose the JNLRs will show the true result of how many people do not listen to certain radio shows.

I am 90% sure that one Dublin station has bought Facebook likes. As their competitors were celebrating reaching 100,000 'likes' , out of nowhere, they had reached nearly 150,000 'likes'

    Seems to coincidental to me...

I agree this is a no brainer, its pathetic if presenters are resorting to acquiring fake twitter followers in an attempt to deceive people into thinking they and their programme are more popular than they actually are. Its potentially quite an important issue too considering radio stations worldwide are placing an increasing significance on social media and the whole concept of online presence. While advertisers will also look at the listenership figures first you cant completely discount the significance of social media. Look at spin1038 , they have a phenomenal online presence with over 100,000 twitter followers, this has without a doubt helped them to their current position in the dublin market.

    Sad if true.

But shur whatever boosts their fragile little egos I suppose. Far easier to pay $100 than say, oh I don't know, be worth following.

God. That's an awful way of doing things. It's a better thing if people are talking about ya on the street. Folks don't meet in a pub and go 'did ya hear how many twitter followers yer man/ lady has?'. They talk about an interview they heard etc. I know what I'd prefer to be remembered as. :)

Could you possibly be referring to a certain Dublin-based radio host who brags about the number of Twitter followers he has in his bio on the station's website?

For those of us who can't quite figure out who you may be referring to, can you please share the name, or a part of it?

And another quick plug for the radio nation site. Why do we need a radio board here when you're plugging away at radio nation.

By the by, David Baker may have bought a load of twitter followers, and his Radio Snowflake online Christmas station had 43,000 followers yet Christmas FM who have been on for 5 years had less. Its not just Baker thats at it. Ive said it before, if you need to BUY followers, you are doing something very wrong and shouldnt be on air in the first place.

David did claim that Radio Snowflake got over 1 million listeners around the world....

Completely agree. I don't get why anyone would do it tbh. Like, you know yourself that 5,000 of your followers are fake, so how does it make you feel better? You'd always be subtracting those 5k from the number in your head unless you're totally in denial...

Is there some sort of psychology behind it? Are people more likely to flock to a DJ's twitter/Facebook page if they have 5k extra followers already? Is it meant to lure people into thinking "Ooh, this guy has 25k followers on Twitter! He must have something good to say!"?

    Just don't get it.

I saw another DJ who has over 11000 followers, but there is loads of those that clearly look fake. Who has more credibility? The Irish presenter with 1500 followers, or the one with 25000 followers most of whom are based in some remote part of the world?

    The thing is tho:

    1. Who goes onto a Twitter profile and checks their followers to verify they're real? (about 1% or less)
    2. If I buy followers in bulk, and I receive 5/6 real followers per day, the bought ones will start getting pushed back the line and after a week or two all the newest ones will be real, so twill take some work to go back and check.

It wasn't a plug, it was a link to a relevant news article which answered the question that was asked. Oh, and RadioNation isn't a rival for boards.ie, its a radio news site. I could just as easily have linked to a similar article on RadioToday.

    Why the negativity?

I do think they're in direct competition no?

If the link is relevant to the conversation, what's wrong with that?

One's a discussion forum web site, the other is an industry news web site. No, they're not in competition, direct or otherwise.

Any chance of getting back on topic? Although what relevance buying twitter followers really has on actual radio, I'm not sure at all...

Yup .. can now see that - didn't realise at the time that anyone was suggesting David Baker was someone who bought followers.
