Persistence, I was the same and if I miss some reasons my level drops fast.

Just keep it up set a target and increase it every month

Are you trying to run too fast?

Sounds like you are running too fast. Slow it down to conversational pace. What kind of distances are you running at the moment? Might be worth following a training program, just to provide a little structure to your training.

Sounds like u are running too fast to me. Slow it right down. Try to build up slowly to five km. Everytime u want to stop slow right down instead. Maybe look at doing couch to five km for something structured.

Going to try that this week, 5K target slow steady pace, Roughly how long should an average person get through 5K?

The average person does not run 5K.
Start by running 5K, worry about the time later.

You could also think about investing in a heart rate monitor, to monitor your effort levels. Certainly helped in my early running days.

Seconding the Couch to 5k suggestion. If you can run a couple of k already, think about starting a few weeks into the program.

Don't think about time at all just cover the distance. Maybe try to run two or three k this week without stopping .four km next week and so on. All very slowly.Get out at least three times a week. Build it up slowly. When u can run five km easily u can start working on your speed.

I agree with the sentiment but I'd switch the content around. Don't worry about distance just run for a certain length of time. If you can do 20 mins three times a week do that. The following week do 22. 5 weeks in and you're doing 30 mins 3 times a week. The key to progressing is to be patient and not push too hard.

+1 I probably should have said don't worry about pace rather than time.

Give up that astro rubbish and it will sort your running out. if you can play ball for two hours you wont be long before you can train for decent cracks at 1 mile - 5k races.

Was in a similar position myself - loved astro, but couldn't run any distance. I was probably not even as fit as you. They both use very different muscles, so often people that are good runners can't last playing astro, and vice versa.

I'm now training for a marathon in two months time, having started in January. I found that having a plan (www.halhigdon.com) made a big difference. It meant that I new exactly what needed to be done on each day, and I made sure I did it. Having music or company would also help.
