I'm finishing college in May and hoping to get into University in September.

Have been searching for a part time job, no luck of course, my question is, would I be able to sign on for 4 months and then sign off when i get into college?

Not everyone who views the thread will have the answer for you, have patience.

More than likely, no. Have you worked in the past two years? If you worked in 2011, you might be able to get jobseekers benefit, but I'm pretty sure that you have to be out of education for three months to get it or to get jobseeker's allowance.

Well what am I supposed to do then? I have to be entitled to something for God sake I'm not sitting on my arse like so many lads on the dole surely I should get something.

What are you finishing in May? If it is secondary school, then you cannot apply for Jobseekers until you have been out of school for three months and are at least 18 years of age.

If you are finishing a Post Leaving Cert course, then you could apply for Jobseekers Allowance but to do so you would have to be seeking full-time, not just part-time, work.

There are a number of things to take into consideration.
    1 Your age
2 Your circumstances - do you live alone, with your parents? What their income is.

Your best bet is to look up your local Labour Exchange and give them a ring. Some students can sign on and get a small amount, but not all are eligible. There is no automatic right to Social Welfare. If you are eligible for a grant, you may be eligible for Dole.

I think you should be ok, but go down to your local dole office and find out off one of the officers, it seems to be different for each persons circumstance really..myself and a guy i go to college with who wish to pursue Third level education in September were given 2 different answers in separate dole offices, i seemed to get the green light but my college buddy didnt so have that checked out asap.

Im classed as a "Third Level Option" by social welfare, maybe you will be too

Go check as soon as you can

    Cheers :)

Also, if your parents are unemployed and claiming for you, you won't be entitled to any, but may be better if they stop claiming for you, then you should get some.

Finishing a PLC, wasn't applicable for a grant because I did a plc the previous year aswell but didn't want to continue that. Can't find work obviously, so I havn't had a cent to me name in nearly a year now.

Live with the mother, 19 years of age, to answer other questions.

I know someone who is still waiting for jobseekers allowance after applying 6 months back.

Then, so long as you are available and looking for full-time work, make an application for Jobseekers Allowance. Info here on the process http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/social_welfare/social_welfare_payments/unemployed_people/jobseekers_allowance.html and this one http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/reference/checklists/checklist_when_applying_for_jobseeker_s_allowance_checklist.html outlines what documentation you will need.

As soon as you have applied for Jobseekers Allowance you can apply for Supplementary Welfare Allowance to tide you over http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/social_welfare/social_welfare_payments/supplementary_welfare_schemes/supplementary_welfare_allow.html

Bear in mind that you will be assesssed on the family income. ie your mothers income. If she's a wage earner, you may not get anything. Do you know if you're eligible for a third level grant? This would be a good guide to whether or not you can get the dole.
